Ex-Canada ambassador slighted by Affleck?s ?Argo?

(AP Photo/Cliff Owen, File)

TORONTO (AP) ? The Canadian former ambassador to Iran who protected Americans at great personal risk during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis says it will reflect poorly on Ben Affleck if he doesn?t say a few words about Canada?s role if the director?s film ?Argo? wins the Oscar for best picture Sunday.

But Ken Taylor ? who said he feels slighted by the movie because it makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis ? is not expecting it.

?I would hope he would. If he doesn?t than it?s a further reflection,? Taylor said. ?But given the events of the last while I?m not necessarily anticipating anything.?

Taylor kept the Americans hidden at the embassy in Tehran and facilitated their escape by getting fake passports and plane tickets for them. He became a hero in Canada and the United States after. The role he played in helping the Americans to freedom was minimized in the film.

?In general it makes it seem like the Canadians were just along for the ride. The Canadians were brave. Period,? Taylor said.

Affleck?s thriller is widely expected to win the best-picture trophy. Two other high-profile best-picture nominees this year, Kathryn Bigelow?s ?Zero Dark Thirty? and Steven Spielberg?s ?Lincoln,? have also been criticized for their portrayal of some factual issues.

Affleck said in a statement Friday night he thought his issue with Taylor had been resolved.

?I admire Ken very much for his role in rescuing the six houseguests. I consider him a hero.?In light of my many conversations as well as a change to an end card that Ken requested I am surprised that Ken continues to take issue with the film,? he said in a statement. ?I spoke to him recently when he asked me to narrate a documentary he is prominently featured in and yet he didn?t mention any lingering concerns.?I agreed to do it and I look forward to seeing Ken at the recording.?

Taylor noted that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN on Thursday night and said ?90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian,? but the film ?gives almost full credit to the American CIA.?

Carter also called ?Argo? a complete distortion of what happened when he accepted an honorary degree from Queen?s University in Canada in November.

?I saw the movie Argo recently and I was taken aback by its distortion of what happened because almost everything that was heroic, or courageous or innovative was done by Canada and not the United States,? Carter said.

Taylor said there would be no movie without the Canadians.

?We took the six in without being asked so it starts there,? Taylor said. ?And the fact that we got them out with some help from the CIA then that?s where the story loses itself. I think Jimmy Carter has it about right, it was 90 percent Canada, 10 percent the CIA.?

He said CIA agent Tony Mendez, played by Affleck in the film, was only in Iran for a day and a half.

The movie also makes no mention of John Sheardown, a deputy at the Canadian embassy who sheltered some of the Americans. Taylor said it was Sheardown who took the first call and agreed right away to take the Americans in. Sheardown recently died and his wife, Zena, called the movie disappointing.

Friends of Taylor were outraged last September when ?Argo? debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival. The original postscript of the movie said that Taylor received 112 citations and awards for his work in freeing the hostages and suggested Taylor didn?t deserve them because the movie ends with the CIA deciding to let Canada have the credit for helping the Americans escape

Taylor called the postscript lines ?disgraceful and insulting? and said it would have caused outrage in Canada if the lines were not changed. Affleck flew Taylor to Los Angeles after the Toronto debut and allowed him to insert a postscript that gave Canada some credit.

Taylor called it a good movie and said he?s not rooting against it, but said it is far from accurate.

?He?s a good director. It?s got momentum. There?s nothing much right from Day 1 I could do about the movie. I changed a line at the end because the caption at the end was disgraceful. It?s like Tiananmen Square, you are sitting in front of a big tank,? he said.

Rush Limbaugh: Why is he 'ashamed' of US?

Rush Limbaugh, on his radio show Thursday, bemoaned how the political parties and media are portraying the impact of the automatic spending cuts that are set to take effect March 1.

Rush Limbaugh on his radio show Thursday said that for the first time in his life, he is ?ashamed? of his country. Why is Rushbo using such harsh language about the United States?

Because the leadership of both political parties and the media are trying to sell the US on an over-the-top, untrue story about the allegedly dire effects of the coming ?sequester,? that?s why. At least we think that?s Mr. Limbaugh?s story.

?Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in my life, I am ashamed of my country. To be watching all of this, to be treated like this, to have our common sense and intelligence insulted the way it?s being insulted? It just makes me ashamed,? said Limbaugh, according to a segment transcript posted on his website.

True, in recent days, the media have been full of stories from administration officials warning of the effects from the $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts known as sequestration, which is set to take effect March 1.

President Obama has talked about everything from effects on military readiness to delays at airports and closed sections of national parks. And GOP leaders have walked the thin line of insisting that big cuts in government spending remain necessary but sequestration would still be a bad thing.

?There is nothing wrong with cutting spending that much ? we should be cutting even more ? but the sequester is an ugly and dangerous way to do it,? wrote House Speaker John Boehner in a Wall Street Journal op-ed earlier this week.

Thus Limbaugh?s line: Watch out! The professional big-government class and its defenders are just scaring you so that Washington can keep spending more and more.

?Here they come, sucking us in, roping us in. Panic here, fear there: Crisis, destruction, no meat inspection, no cops, no teachers, no firefighters, no air-traffic control. I?m sorry, my days of getting roped into all this are over,? Rush said Thursday.

OK, notice anything in that quote? Such as ?no cops?? Yes, Limbaugh has set up an exaggerated straw man to build an outrage, and he can thump it with a rhetorical bat until it breaks apart in bits. Or something like that.

That doesn?t mean he?s without points here. Notice the reference earlier to $1.2 trillion in automatic cuts. That?s how much the cuts would amount to if they?re allowed to continue for a decade. Cuts the first year would be about $85 billion, according to Representative Boehner.

But Limbaugh also said this: ?Do you really think 800,000 people are gonna lose their jobs in the Pentagon because we cut $22 billion? Do you really think air-traffic control?s gonna shut down? Do you really think there aren?t gonna be any meat inspectors? Do you really think that all of these horror stories are going to happen? I don?t.?

He?s right the horror stories won?t happen, because nobody has said 800,000 Pentagon workers will lose their jobs. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has said he?ll have to furlough that many Defense Department civilians if sequestration occurs, meaning that they will only be paid for working four days a week instead of five. So they?ll get a 20 percent reduction in pay, which isn?t fun. But it?s better than getting laid off.

Air-traffic control won?t shut. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has warned that travelers may face 90-minute delays at airports because of air-traffic restrictions. Meat inspectors will stay on the job, and so forth.

Yes, we know Limbaugh talks this way all the time, for calculated effect. He?s using it as a tool to try to make a larger point. Like many conservatives, he considers the federal government per se a huge, unproductive drag on the economy. But you?d be surprised how many people believe pretty much every word he says.

Tech Leaders Create Most Lucrative Science Prize In History

These massive awards go to researchers who have made truly novel discoveries. They tend to be older researchers past their prime who have already reaped rewards of their research (fame and likely money).

Funding for general research in life sciences has dipped to an all time low, with success rates less than 10% (it was much higher before the economic crisis a few years ago). The top amazing research by big groups still gets funded, but there is still some excellent work that goes unfunded, particularly by young up and coming talented researchers. These young investigators don't yet have a name for themselves, and unfortunately that impedes their ability to get grants and thus do their research.

The Gates foundation is an excellent example of how this can be done -- In today's economy, I would prefer to see something similar than a massive pot going to a few amazing but well established researchers. Of course this wouldn't have made the news if it wasn't over the top...

U.S. seeks to tackle trade-secret thieves

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Faced with what experts say is growing theft of U.S. trade secrets by China and other nations, the White House on Wednesday vowed to protect American businesses and economic security more aggressively and consider tougher laws at home.

The White House did not directly cite China, which many see as the main threat and did not propose new penalties on perpetrators. A study released this week by a private security firm accused the Chinese military of orchestrating numerous cyber attacks against U.S. businesses, a charge Beijing has denied.

The Obama administration said its strategy aims to counter what U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called "a significant and steadily increasing threat to America's economy and national security interests."

"As new technology has torn down traditional barriers to international business and global commerce, they also make it easier for criminals to steal secrets and to do so from anywhere, anywhere in the world," Holder said at a White House event to unveil the strategy.

He said the perpetrators include "individuals, companies and even countries that are eager to tilt the playing field to their advantage."

The plan includes working with like-minded governments to put pressure on bad actors, using trade policy tools where possible, increasing criminal prosecutions and launching a 120-day review to see whether new legislation is needed.

While the report did not specifically name any country as the main culprit, it listed 17 cases of trade secret theft by Chinese companies or individuals since 2010, far more than any other country mentioned in the report.

"We have repeatedly raised our concerns about trade secret theft by any means at the highest levels with senior Chinese officials and we will continue to do so," Under Secretary of State Robert Hormats said.

Those cases cited mostly involved employees stealing trade secrets on the job rather than cyber attacks. U.S. corporate victims of the theft included General Motors, Ford, DuPont, Dow Chemical, Motorola, Boeing and Cargill.

Last week, Representative Dutch Ruppersberger, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said U.S. companies suffered estimated losses in 2012 of more than $300 billion due to trade secret theft, a large share due to Chinese cyber espionage.

Cybersecurity and intelligence experts welcomed the White House plan as a first step, but some said much more needed to be done.

"You've got a nation state taking on private corporations," said former CIA director Michael Hayden. "That's kind of unprecedented ... We have not approached resolution with this at all," he said.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the nation's largest business lobby, offered a lukewarm statement of support, while other industry groups expressed more enthusiasm for the effort.

"We strongly endorse and applaud the administration's focus on curbing theft of trade secrets, which poses a serious and growing threat to the software industry around the world," said Business Software Alliance President and CEO Robert Holleyman.

BUILDING ON EXISTING EFFORTS

Victoria Espinel, the White House intellectual property rights enforcement coordinator, said the new strategy improves existing government efforts to protect the innovation that drives the U.S. economy and job creation.

The report that laid out the strategy repeated a 2011 White House recommendation that the maximum sentence for economic espionage be increased to at least 20 years, from 15 currently.

Another part of the solution is promoting a set of "best practices" that companies can use to protect themselves against cyber attacks and other espionage, Espinel said.

The report also said the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation was "expanding its efforts to fight computer intrusions that involve the theft of trade secrets by individual, corporate and nation-state cyber hackers."

In an interview, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said the problem of trade secret theft in China was a factor in the decisions of some U.S. companies to move operations back to the United States.

The companies have "had very frank conversations with the Chinese, (saying) 'You know it's one thing to accept a certain level of copyright knock-offs, but if you're going to take our core technology, then we're better off being in our home country,'" Kirk told Reuters.

Supreme Court rules for Army father in custody battle

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court sided with an American father on Tuesday in an international custody dispute over a girl who has been living outside the country under a lower court order.

By a 9-0 vote, the court ruled that U.S. Army Sergeant Jeffrey Chafin had a right to seek custody of his 6-year-old daughter, Eris, even though she had been taken to Scotland by her mother, Lynne Chafin, a Scottish national.

A lawyer for the mother said no Scottish court would allow the child to return to the United States.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had dismissed Jeffrey Chafin's appeal, saying the issue was moot because the girl by then was already in Scotland and beyond its control.

The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that the appeals court should have considered the merits of the appeal by Jeffrey Chafin, who had filed in 2010 for divorce from his wife.

"This dispute is very much alive," and the Chafins "continue to vigorously contest the question of where their daughter will be raised," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court.

But Roberts said Jeffrey Chafin still faces an uphill battle, noting the possibility that Scottish courts could ignore a U.S. court ruling in his favor.

Michael Manely, a lawyer for Jeffrey Chafin, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Stephen Cullen, a lawyer for Lynne Chafin, said his client has a "very very strong case" should the matter return to the 11th Circuit, and predicted Scottish courts would have the ultimate say.

"A Scottish court is never going to return the child to the United States after this amount of time, because it couldn't possibly be good for the child," Cullen said in a telephone interview. "It would be complete madness for the Scottish court to say, OK, it's three years later, we'll send the child back."

Lynne Chafin and Eris now live in Ayrshire, southwest of Glasgow, Cullen said.

In a concurring opinion, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg noted that the legal confusion arose because the U.S. Congress did not indicate how custody appeals should be handled under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Adoption.

Dragging out the Chafin case "is hardly consistent with the convention's objectives," Ginsburg wrote.

Her opinion was joined by Justices Antonin Scalia and Stephen Breyer.

Lynne Chafin had lived with her daughter in Scotland since 2007, apart from her husband because of his job.

In February 2010, she had traveled with her daughter to visit him in Madison, Alabama, in a failed effort to save their marriage, and was deported after overstaying her visa.

Eris at first stayed behind, but in 2011 a federal judge in Alabama said Lynne Chafin could take her back to Scotland, calling it the child's "habitual residence" under the Hague Convention. Lynne Chafin then took her daughter to Scotland, and the 11th Circuit later dismissed the father's appeal.

The case is Chafin v. Chafin, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 11-1347.

Apple's suppliers: an interactive map

Apple's suppliers: an interactive map

While Apple's relationship with Chinese factories came under fire last year, and their processor and glass manufacturing in the U.S. came up as a result, there's a lot more to their logistics than just those two places. To that point, ChinaFile has put together an interactive map, compiled from Apple's 2013 supplier's list, showing just where all the components and materials from all our iPhones, iPads, iPods, Macs, and related accessories and peripherals come from, and how much.

Neither China watchers nor Apple watchers will be particularly surprised to note that the vast majority of Apple suppliers happen to be in Asia. In fact, out of the 748 listed, more than 600 are in Asia. Of these, 331 suppliers are in mainland China.

Check it out, and see where what you're holding in your hands, using on your lap, or looking at on your desk, originated.

2 Firefighters Dead, 2 Hurt in Texas Lodge Fire

Two Texas fire lieutenants have died of burns after battling a lodge hall fire, a city official said Saturday.

Gregory Pickard and Eric Wallace, both with the department in the Central Texas city of Bryan, were in a group of firefighters responding to the blaze about midnight Friday at a Knights of Columbus hall, city spokeswoman Mary Lynne Stratta said.

The team entered the burning building but didn't emerge when ordered to evacuate, Stratta said.

Wallace, 36, died at the scene and Pickard, 54, on Saturday at a hospital in Galveston, she said.

"He called for help, said he was low on air," Stratta said of Wallace, a 13-year Bryan Fire Department veteran.

With Wallace still inside, Pickard and two other firefighters ? Ricky Mantey Jr. and Mitchel Moran ? were sent in to rescue him when the roof collapsed in flames, Fire Chief Randy McGregor said.

Rapid response units found the men inside the building. Mantey, 30, and Moran, 21, also were injured. They were taken to the Galveston hospital with burns. On Saturday, Stratta said they were both in serious but stable condition.

The Texas State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire in Bryan, about 90 miles northwest of Houston. A news release from the city said nothing was being held at the hall at the time.

"These four courageous individuals represent the best of the profession and are true heroes in every sense of the word," McGregor said.

Services for Wallace are scheduled for Thursday in Bryan, while those for Pickard, a 32-year veteran of the department, are pending.

NFL QB Takes Out Loans Like Uniformed Law Students

You?ll have to excuse me if this post comes off a bit more confused or muddled than it usually does. It?s being written amidst the swirl and din of Valentine?s Day preparations. This year, I?m making dinner which I thought would be the easier (read: cheaper) option. Listen, there?s a reason I?m poor. And it?s not because I?m secretly a genius. This is the dumbest thing I?ve done. Just got back from the grocery store, where I spent a small fortune on one (still hypothetical) meal. Have I mentioned I can?t cook? This is a Hindenburgian disaster and I wish I could blame my girlfriend or the Valentine?s Industrial Complex. Maybe love itself for the way it blinds you to your inability to measure up, if only briefly. But no, none of these are the likely culprit. As I already said, there?s a reason I?m poor. A reason I?m financing a T14 debt burden on a TTT salary. I?m humble enough to admit that the only reason I continue to make bad decisions is a simple one: I think my mom smoked crack while she was pregnant with me.

Vince Young is broke. Or, he may be broke. At any rate, Vince Young is currently financing a Pro Bowl debt burden on a waiver wire salary.

Let?s talk sports?

GET BROKE OR DIE TRYING

The famous marshmallow test posited that children who were able to delay their own gratification in order to gain a bigger reward tended to do better at life. They got better grades, had strong relationships and were generally healthier than their quick-draw marshmallow-gobbling counterparts. Vince Young allegedly took out a high-interest loan in order to fund his own birthday party and I?m not saying Vince Young has poor impulse control. I?m just saying he?ll eat that f*cking marshmallow right out of your hand. Probably take a few of your fingers along with it.

Young is currently embroiled in a lawsuit he filed against advisers whom Young claims stole money from him. The Wonderlic Wonder was told that a loan he took out during the NFL lockout had come due and he didn?t remember taking out any such loan. I mean, he didn?t exactly remember:

Young is challenging a $1.7 million judgment obtained against him in New York in July by Pro Player. The sum represents the balance of $1.9 million borrowed at 20 percent interest in the former University of Texas star?s name in May 2011. Young, who has been out of football since he was cut by the Buffalo Bills before last season, was one of more than a dozen NFL players who obtained loans from Pro Player during the lockout.

He testified during a deposition in December that he ?probably? signed some of the loan documents in the presence of a notary at a law office in Houston. But he said he had no need for a loan, never sought one and didn?t have access to the proceeds.

Probably. Vince Young probably joins a long list of distinguished broke athletes because he probably never absorbed the lesson that ignorantly signing a bunch of documents in the presence of a notary is not the wisest course of action, no matter whether you can throw a football over them mountains or not. That or Vince Young is lying. He?s either monumentally stupid (probably) or duplicitous (probably) or both (probably).

Listen, Vince Young might be a great guy who likes to party shirtless with other great guys. I don?t know. But he is clearly a guy who?s seen better days. A guy who fancies himself an NFL quarterback and got cut by the Buffalo Bills, who are only technically an NFL team. Vince Young has seen better days alright. Probably.

BARRY BONDS HAS AN ENORMOUS DOME

We?ve talked quite a bit about drug use in these cyberpages. My mom?s crack habit notwithstanding, most of the mentions have been of athletes caught up in our nation?s perpetual outrage machine where drugs are but our most effective tool to gin up that frothing superiority. And the patron saint of our nation?s true national pastime is also the all-time homerun leader of our nation?s fake one. Barry Bonds, an avatar of America?s race, drugs and sports discord.

Yet for all the symbolic and cranial heft that Bonds carried, the government was only able to jack him on a measly obstruction charge. An obstruction charge that, Bonds? appellate attorney argues, hinges on this exchange:

Prosecutors asked Bonds during his December 2003 grand jury appearance whether Greg Anderson, his personal trainer, ever gave him ?anything that required a syringe to inject yourself with??

Bonds referred to his father, former major leaguer Bobby Bonds, when he responded ?that?s what keeps our friendship. You know, I am sorry, but that ? you know, that ? I was a celebrity child, not just in baseball by my own instincts. I became a celebrity child with a famous father. I just don?t get into other people?s business because of my father?s situation, you see ??

This is pure dada. In all of these athlete drugs cases, the government has been forced to settle for lesser, seemingly unrelated charges. Think Lance Armstrong and the whistleblower case. The template here is Al Capone?s tax evasion. But the above-quoted exchange is nothing like Al Capone?s tax evasion. If it were, the IRS would have asked Al Capone to pay his taxes and Al Capone would have responded ?Banana see doodoo trunk snoring.?

But lest you think the government is wasting your tax dollars and their time with this prosecution, fear not. The end of the article on Bonds? appeal lays bare the entire charade that this is based on. The one sentence that ends the piece is as follows:

If Bonds? conviction is upheld, he will have to serve 30 days house arrest.

Banana see doodoo trunk snoring.

RAP SHEET ROLL CALL

* Four Alabama football players allegedly rolled tide all over two hapless victims? heads, robbing and concussing them in the process. No one talks about the serious concussion issues involved in the sport of robbing and stealing.

* Larry Bird?s son allegedly tried to run over his ex-girlfriend. If you?re hoping that Larry Bird named his son Barry, you too will be severely disappointed by this story.

* Speaking of awesome names, former NFL lineman Bubba Paris was charged with failing to file tax returns. In the comments, feel free to create your own name like Bubba Paris. I?ll get things started with Cooter Dublin.

Broncos LB Joe Mays, lost for the season in Week Eight with an ankle injury, hopes to be ready to go for the start of OTAs.

So what can the Chargers learn from the Ravens?

The all-time Raiders interception list is led by the guy who draped himself in Stickum, at a time when it was socially acceptable to do so.

Giants RB Andre Brown is preparing to be the starter.

The Redskins will have to adjust their asinine ?70 high schools? argument to 69.? (Shut up, Beavis.)

The Cowboys trust Bill Callahan (enough not to sabotage a Super Bowl . . . if they ever get there again).

Eagles coach Chip Kelly likes the continuity that tight ends coach Ted Williams, who has been with the team since 1995,? brings to the table.? (Or maybe Kelly was enamored with the idea of giving employment to a frozen head.)

Several Packers greats will be signing autographs this weekend at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa.

The Bears? new offense will reflect a compilation of multiple systems.? (Is ?compilation? the FCC-approved alternative to ?clusterf?k??)

The Lions won?t raise ticket prices for 2013.

The Vikings? sixth-round pick won?t go to Washington because QB Donovan McNabb didn?t play enough in 2011 to satisfy the play-time threshold that would have sweetened a sour deal.

Panthers LB Luke Kuechly is slightly more inconspicuous at Boston College than QB Cam Newton is at Auburn.

The Buccaneers have a huge advantage over the rest of the NFC South when it comes to cap space.

Saints QB Drew Brees may have let the cat out of the bag regarding the return of WrestleMania to the Superdome.

It?s unlikely that the Falcons? ?give us a new stadium or we?ll move . . . to the suburbs? tactic will get anyone worked up.

With the Cardinals projected at more than $3 million over the cap, G.M. Steve Keim knows some tough decisions are coming.

Was the Seahawks defense in 2012 the best in franchise history?

49ers LB Aldon Smith has added MMA training to his offseason repertoire.

The Rams are accepting applications for the fifth Annual Playground Build/Community Improvement Project.? (At least Titus Young will have someplace to hang out.)

Suicide in India

Over 130,000 people die by suicide every year in India. The suicide rate increased by 43.5% from 6.2 in 1980 to 8.9 in 1990 and by 28% from 8.9 in 1990 to 11.2 in 2011. About 76% of suicides in India are completed by persons between 15-44 years of age. Poisoning (mainly by pesticides), hanging and self immolation were the common methods used. Suicide is a multidimensional problem and, hence, suicide prevention programs should also be multidimensional. The priority areas are: reducing the availability of and access to pesticide; reducing alcohol availability and consumption; promoting responsible media reporting of suicide: promoting and supporting NGOs; improving the capacity of primary care workers and specialist mental health services; providing support to those bereaved by suicide; and training the gatekeepers, such as teachers, police officers, practitioners of alternate systems of medicine, and faith healers. Examples of limiting access to pesticides, development of media guidelines and intervention for suicide attempters will be discussed.

Founder of Sneha, a suicide prevention centre in India, and Head of Department of Psychiatry, Voluntary Health Services, Chennai, Dr Lakshmi Vijayakumar is a member of the World Health Organization?s Network on suicide research and prevention and a member of the International Academy of Suicide Research. She has published papers, authored chapters and edited a book on suicide and its prevention. She has been conferred with ?Bharathi?, "Gnananda?, ?Woman of the year?, ?Woman Achiever Award? and ?For the sake honour? awards in India. She has been conferred ?Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (FRCPsych) the highest award given by the college for her work in suicide prevention locally, nationally and internationally. She has been appointed as Associate Professor by the University of Melbourne, Australia and Adjunct Honorary Professor of Psychiatry, Griffith University, Australia. ?

Pope shows lifetime jobs aren't always for life

The pope's announcement that he will resign has taken many people by surprise, but experts on aging say perhaps it shouldn't.

They say that as people live longer, the physical and mental challenges of old age are catching up with more of those in positions of power. Many are choosing to step down instead of continuing in jobs traditionally held until death.

Justices appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court used to serve until death. But since 1955, 21 justices have retired and only one, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, died in office.

The Netherlands' Queen Beatrix just announced she would pass the crown to her son in April. And 20 percent of U.S. senators are now 70 or older.

France hunting fraudsters in horsemeat scandal

PARIS (AP) ? Europe's horsemeat scandal is spreading, as French consumer safety authorities say companies from Romania, Cyprus and the Netherlands were part of a supply chain that resulted in horsemeat being disguised as beef in frozen lasagna sold around the continent.

French companies were also part of the supply chain.

France's junior minister for consumer goods, Benoit Hamon, said Saturday an initial investigation shows that one of the French companies bought frozen meat from a Cypriot trader, who had received the meat from a Dutch food company. And that Dutch company had received the meat from a Romanian supplier.

Romanian authorities are investigating. Dutch authorities say they are ready to investigate if necessary.

Lasagna meals and burgers suspected of containing horsemeat have been pulled from shelves in Britain, Ireland, Sweden and France.

How to Create A Budget-Friendly, Personalized Gift with Tumblr

Dana Zemeck

How to Create A Budget-Friendly, Personalized Gift with Tumblr Tumblr is known as a social platform designed for sharing, re-sharing, and general public display. However, there's a less-used feature that also makes it a wonderful platform to communicate in a much more personal way?its private blog feature. You can create a private blog full of love and inspiration especially for a specific person, be it a friend who's having a rough day, your mom on her birthday, or your sweetheart on Valentine's Day. It's super easy, it's free, it's fast and, according to the first person I made one for, it's the best gift ever.

In a nutshell, you create a private blog, upload a bunch of fun pictures, videos, quotes, and so forth, and then give the lucky recipient the URL and password. As an example, I made a secret "Lifehacker Happiness" blog. The password is haveaniceday. All of the content is my own, mostly pictures I took with my phone.

Here's how you do it:

Create Your Tumblr Account

  • The first blog you create on Tumblr will be public by default. Give it a random name, such as randomnotablog.tumblr.com). Any subsequent blogs can be private.
  • Select the settings icon in the top navigation of your Tumblr dashboard and click on the blog name.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and uncheck the "Allow search engines to index your blog" option, as well as any options that have to do with posting to Facebook or Twitter. Save. Now, even though you have a public blog, no one will find it.
  • And from there on in, just don't post anything on it.

Create Your First Private Tumblr

  • Select the drop down list in the upper right corner and click on "Create a new blog."
  • Name your blog (you can change this later if you like) and create the URL (you can change this, too). Choose something cute and personal, like iheartyoudana.tumblr.com.
  • Select the "Password protect this blog" option and create a password. Choose something cute for your password, too, such as unicorn or rainbow.

Hide it So Nothing You Post Will Be Picked Up By Google or Other Search Engines

  • Select the settings icon in the top navigation of your Tumblr dashboard and click on the private blog name.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and uncheck the "Allow search engines to index your blog" option, as well as any options that have to do with posting to Facebook or Twitter. Save.

Customize

  • Upload your own avatar image. Save.
  • Click "customize."
  • Select "Themes" at the top left and select "Free themes" from the drop down menu.
  • Find a theme you like and click "Use." (You can change this anytime.)
  • Take a look at the other customization options and customize as you like.
  • Save and close.
  • Visit your Tumblr site to see if you like how it looks.

Start Posting!

Now that you're all set up, start uploading fun posts from the main Tumblr dashboard. Important: Make sure you're uploading to the right blog by selecting your private blog from the dropdown list on the upper right. That blog should be selected whenever you are posting.

Extra Tips

Use your own content. Images such as you and your friend hanging out will make the blog feel more personal and special.

Don't post anything sensitive. Such as naked pictures or anything mortifying. You don't want those images to suddenly show up on search engines if you somehow accidentally check the "Allow search engines to index your blog" at some future point.

Download the mobile app. It's fast, convenient and makes it super easy to post images that you keep on your phone.

Put up at least 20 posts before you share it. That'll make for a gift blog that feels substantial. Don't stop at 20 if you want to add more! New content is what makes it so cool and truly special.

Experiment with different themes and customization settings. Make it look at cool as possible.

'This is it': Mammoth winter storm hits Northeast

By Erin McClam and Kari Huus, NBC News

Updated at 3:15 a.m. ET: A powerful winter storm pounded the Northeast Saturday, with gusting winds and heavy snow causing power failures for hundreds of thousands of people, dozens of accidents and fuel shortages at gas stations.?

At least one death was confirmed, a snow-related car accident in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

By midnight ET, 19 inches of snow had fallen at Mount Sinai on New York's Long Island and 18.5 inches at Manchester, Conn., weather.com reported.

In Massachusetts, gusts over 50 mph were reported in Boston and over 60 mph on Nantucket Island. Winds up to 75 mph were possible in Provincetown, forecasters said.

Police said hundreds of cars were stuck on the Long Island Expressway, NBC weatherman Al Roker said in a message on Twitter.

The winter storm gathered strength as two weather systems ? a so-called clipper pattern sweeping across the Midwest and a band of rain from the South ? converged over the Northeast early Friday.

By late Friday, the storm had arrived in earnest and was expected to pummel New England through Saturday and last as long as Sunday farther north.

Governors of New York, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island?declared states of emergency.?

More than 800 National Guard soldiers and airmen were activated in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York to provide roadway support, emergency transportation and back-up for first responders, the Department of Defense said Friday evening, while governors in the region warned people to get home and be prepared?for power outages.

Airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights on Friday, Boston closed its subway, Amtrak suspended some service, and cities across the Northeast prepared to deploy an armada of snowplows and salt-spreading trucks.

More than half a million people were without power, including a whopping 389,000 customers in Massachusetts, 177,000 in Rhode Island?and?35,000 in Connecticut, and more power failures were expected overnight.?

For people in the blizzard?s path, forecasters and authorities had a clear message: Stay home.

Driving bans
Governors in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts announced restrictions on driving.

In the most sweeping ban, Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick ordered?all non-essential vehicles off the roads by 4 p.m. and said people should brace to be snowed in for two days. He said the storm was "profoundly different" from others?the state?has endured in recent years.

Gov. Dannel Malloy?of Connecticut banned car traffic on limited-access highways starting at 4 p.m. State police reported nearly 100 minor accidents across the state by Friday afternoon.

"If you don't currently have a reason to be on the road, if you're not an emergency personnel that's required to report to work somewhere, stay home," Malloy said at a state armory news conference. "This is it. Things are starting to accumulate."

In the Poughkeepsie, N.Y. crash, a car driven by an 18-year-old female went out of control in the snow and struck Muril M. Hancock, 74, who was walking near the shoulder, police said. Hancock died from his injuries at the hospital.

The eastern part of Connecticut was experiencing white-out conditions late into the evening, the state's emergency operations center reported, and even snowplows were immobilized because of the weather.

Several motorists were reported stranded on snowed-in highways and interstates, but no injuries had been reported. Still, emergency crews were unable to respond due to the severe conditions.

A 19-car pileup on Interstate 295 in Falmouth, Maine, was blamed on the storm. Police said there were minor injuries.

Forecasters said they expected Massachusetts to get the most snowfall,?with an?accumulation of up to 3 feet in some spots. The worst snowfall on record in Boston was a 27.5-inch blast a decade ago.

Near-hurricane force winds
The Weather Channel said forecast as much as 2 feet of snow in Hartford, Conn., and as much as 15 inches in New York.

Coastal residents were warned that the winds could top 70 mph.

Those living on north- and east-facing shorelines from Boston south to Cape Cod Bay were told to prepare for tides 2 to 4 feet above normal.

"Coastal flooding is expected on the Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts coastlines," the National Weather Service said.

"I'm really nervous," Kathy Niznansky, a 65-year-old teacher in coastal Fairfield, Conn. told The Associated Press. Niznansky is still recovering from flooding from Superstorm Sandy which arrived on her birthday and?knocked her out of her house near the beach for two months. "Now I'm really worried about this tide tonight. I just don't want any more flooding."

Elsewhere, Rhode Island police asked people for loaner snowmobiles, and out-of-state utility crews headed for Connecticut to help.

?Sandy survivors: It's like a repeat 'nightmare'??

Airline cancellations piled up all morning. Almost 3,000 flights were scrapped for Friday and more than 1,000 more for Saturday, according to FlightAware.com.

At the major airports in New York and New England, most major airlines said they would shut down completely Friday afternoon.

Schools were closed in Boston and for most of New England on Friday. Patrick ordered non-essential state workers to stay home Friday and encouraged private employers to do the same.

In New York, the transit agency added more than 20 afternoon trains on its Metro-North commuter line from Grand Central Terminal to get people out of the city before the worst hit.

The Metro-North suspended service Friday night due to the storm. The Long Island Rail Road shut down service east of Speonk about 9 p.m.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned people to stay in and to use public transportation if they had to go out, although even that carried the possibility of disruptions. The city had 250,000 tons of salt at the ready for the roads.

He encouraged New Yorkers to stay in and cook a meal or read a good book.

"This is a very serious storm, and we should treat it that way," said Tom Prendergast, president of the agency that runs New York subways and buses.

The weather service warned that the combination of heavy snow and high winds would limit visibility and cause whiteout conditions at times.

"Those venturing outdoors may become lost or disoriented," the weather service said in an advisory issued for the Boston area.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Sandy in back of Easterners' minds as snow falls

(AP) ? For many in the Northeast, the warnings were eerily familiar: Stock up on food and water. Stay off the roads. Be prepared to lose power.

The snowstorm sweeping through the region brought with it echoes of Superstorm Sandy, if not in intensity, in the dread of residents waiting to see what a new storm would bring.

The snowy, windy system that bore down on the Northeast on Friday was expected to drop 8 to 16 inches on the areas hardest hit by Sandy, a swath including New Jersey, New York City, Long Island and Connecticut.

A moderate storm surge was possible, too ? but nothing like the waves that drowned much of the region in late October. Still, the prospect frightened Eddie Malone, a resident of Lindenhurst on Long Island whose house has been under renovation since Sandy's flooding wiped out his first floor.

"I'm not afraid of the snow ? instead, the sea surge, it may be 7 feet," Malone said. "I think Sandy was 12 or 13 feet, but 7 feet scares me. ... We had no power for two weeks, and now I'm afraid we are going to lose it again."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg sought to reassure folks, saying nothing like Sandy's surge was expected and stressing that no evacuations were being ordered, as they were before the superstorm.

"Sandy was a big storm that was devastating to a lot of people," he said. "I don't think this storm is going to do that."

In Fairfield, Conn., 65-year-old teacher Kathy Niznansky braced for potential flooding just about a month after she was able to return to her house near the beach. She worried about her sump pump failing if she loses power around high tide.

"If we have another one, sometimes I think maybe you should move," she said. "I think if I got water in my house from this storm, I think it would really do me in."

Hemlock Hardware in Fairfield did a brisk business on shovels, batteries, firewood, salt, sand and sleds. The store was getting a lot of calls for generators, too.

"There's definitely a change in response to storms now," said owner Scott Pesavento. "Power outages, I guess, is the first concern now when they hear 'storm.'"

Al Terrile, a 69-year-old retired Southport resident, stocked up on batteries, a box of firewood and a light at the hardware store. He lost power for four days during Sandy.

"Maybe nothing will happen but just in case," he said. "It seems like our electrical system has suddenly turned fragile."

At the Jersey shore, where waves of 12 feet and moderate flooding were possible, Brick Township and Toms River issued voluntary evacuation orders for areas still recovering from Sandy.

"We're telling people, if they can, find shelter elsewhere," said Edward Moroney, a Brick Township spokesman.

In New York City's Staten Island, at a tent shelter set up for superstorm victims still living without power, volunteers used tarps and a makeshift drain to keep the bad weather out. Manager Donna Graziano said she feared the new storm would keep her regulars away.

"A lot of residents don't have the means to cook anything," she said. "I'm sure for tonight they'll make arrangements, but it's heartbreaking to me because I hear their cries every day. I give them their hugs."

Douglas Beman, 30, of Greenburgh in the northern New York suburbs, was thinking of Sandy ? and the long gas lines that followed it ? as he filled his Chevy Tahoe and a 5-gallon gas can at a Mobil station.

"Sandy taught me this lesson: Stock up on gasoline," he said.

In coastal areas of Queens and Long Island, not nearly recovered yet from Sandy, memories were easily stirred.

"A little snow doesn't scare me," said Leeann Rivera, 43, stocking up at the only major grocery store still open in the Sandy-ravaged Far Rockaway section of Queens. "But if we were talking about the type of damage that Sandy did, I'd be gone. I would leave New York right now."
