Review:

As a franchise, Resident Evil stands out as one of the best out there. Part of the reason for that is the consistency in the writing. Each of the films was written by Paul W.S. Anderson and you can tell where he has envisioned the series to be headed from the first movie. His grasp on the Umbrella Corporation and the characters of the video games is second to none.

Back in the late 1990s, I had heard that George A. Romero had been asked to write the script for the adaptation of the game to the screen. That script, however, was scraped mainly due in part to its similarities with the progression of the video game. I can?t help but wonder what Romero?s version would have looked like?

With Anderson?s versions, you don?t need to be a gamer to enjoy them. Players of the game and moviegoers alike can certainly appreciate the films for what they are. The characters in the franchise have not all remained constant, but you develop an understanding of the role that each of them played within the scope of the entire plot. Milla Jovovich is flawless as Alice and honestly, I cannot think of a better actor to play the part. The additions of Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo, Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine, Mike Epps as LJ, and Ali Larter as Claire Redfield are only a small example of the talent you?ll find within.

The aspect of the movie that deals with the T-Virus, zombies, monsters, and the like is superb. The action is non-stop and each time you think you?re just going to get just another zombie movie, Anderson introduced something new to be scared of.

As a whole, the franchise sets the bar high. Is it going to win an Academy Award? Probably not, as critics tend to pick those pieces that appeal to a wider subset of the population. Will fans appreciate the action, humour, and characterization developed along the way? Absolutely. If you haven?t seen any of the films, why the heck not? They do appeal to more than the zombie lovers out there!

Russia Wants China To Prepay For Gas To Fund Pipe

Posted on Sep. 28, 2012 From Reuters

Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom (GAZP.MM) wants China to pay up front for gas to meet 40 percent of the costs of building the pipeline, Russia's energy minister said on Thursday, after the company reported progress in talks with Beijing.

Top energy producer Russia has been in negotiations to supply fuel-hungry China with natural gas for years but the talks have stalled due to failure to agree a price.

Pro Footballer, Kanu Nwankwo, Oil & Gas Mogul, Walter - Bella Naija

Nigerian leadership awareness non -profit organization, Business Leadership Awareness Group (BLAG) will honour 3 successful entrepreneurs who have been making valuable contributions to humanity with a colourful event.

Speaking on the forthcoming event, the executive director of the non for profit organization,?Ossy Otegba,?disclosed that BLAG is currently working on a year book that will promote these outstanding individuals ? pro footballer, Kanu Nwankwo, business executive/oil mogul, Walter Wagbatsoma and philanthropist, Sade Okoya, so that they can be encouraged to do more.

Here are the profiles of the outstanding individuals

Kanu Nwankwo
Popularly known as Papilo, Kanu Nwanwko comes from a humble background but he rose to fame with remarkable exploits in football and business. Today, he owns a chain of businesses with diverse interest in oil, property, hospitality and photography.

The Owerri, Imo State born businessman is regarded as one Nigerian with a heart of gold because of his immense contributions to the society. Through these his many works, it was no surprise that he was a made a UNICEF (?United Nations Children?s Fund)?ambassador for two consecutive years.

A few years ago, the pro footballer encountered a life threatening heart ailment. He was tenacious and miraculously he got healed after prayers from family, friends and fans all over the world as well as surgical operations in the USA. Ever since his successful surgery, ?Kanu returned actively to playing football and used his fame to help assist others also battling with the life threatening condition. He supported charity organizations including Heart of Gold Hospice and later on, launched the Kanu Nwankwo Heart Foundation ? this non-profit organization has raised millions of Naira for children with heart related ailments. Many have been treated both home and abroad and are living a healthier, better life.

Walter Wagbatsoma
He has made a name for himself as one of Nigeria?s most successful business men in the Energy Sector. Walter?Wagbatsoma?s selfless contributions to humanity also endeared him to many within and outside the federation. He is the co-founder of Ontaro Oil and Gas, a pan African oil and gas company that is notable for delivery on its promises.

His track record as a professional in the banking and energy sector speaks volumes. Humble and Cheerful, Walter hails from Delta State. He previously worked with Shell Petroleum Development Company Audit Department in the 1990s, he later moved to Zenith Bank, Eco Bank and FSB International and Trade Bank where he displayed his leadership and entrepreneurial skills to the satisfaction of his co-workers. Every one who knows Walter, we always testify that he is a goal getter and were certianly not surprised when he won the Leventis Group Account for Zenith Bank several years ago.

He later moved into the oil and gas sector after a stint at Trade Bank, where he helped establish the energy subsidiary. His wealth of experience and customer loyalty helped him get the front burner of the energy sector within a short period of time. He made an overwhelming success of his energy business but never forgot to invest back into the lives of the less privileged in the society. Fondly described as a man with a heart of gold, Walter has also used his influence to resolve conflicts in the Niger Delta.

Some of his philanthropic deeds include contributions towards eradicating malaria and HIV/AIDS in African countries. One of his establishments, Canaan Logistics also donates about 80% of its annual profit to charitable organizations working with children. Happily married to Otsaye with two lovely children, Walter Wagbatsoma is a graduate from the University of Lagos, where he studied Accounting for his First Degree and Business Administration in the same institution for his Masters Degree.

Sade Okoya
The wife of top Nigerian industrialist, Chief Akanni Rasak Okoya, Sade Okoya is known as one of the nation?s most glamorous women at social gatherings. Tall and elegant, the Sociology graduate from the University of Lagos, knows how to get everyone?s attention with her fab attires. However, Sade is not just a smart woman with a pretty face, she is one woman that has a heart of gold for the less privileged. In recent times, with the support from her husband who is the chairman of Eleganza Group & RAO Property, she has been giving scholarships to 40 less privileged students currently studying in various institutions of higher learning every year.

Buying Storage Containers ? A Brief Guide

Storage containers are popular because they offer space. Today you can easily find a number of dealers and wholesalers supplying good quality and long lasting storage containers.

There are many types as they are used for different purposes. One example of a storage container is the one-trip container. Mainly made in Asia, it is used for delivering cargo loads in a single trip across the ocean. So before you do any purchasing of storage containers, do proper research and inquiries to ensure that the containers you?re buying suit your needs.

The sellers whom you would go to buy or to rent these containers are mostly shipping companies. These companies supply accommodation units, which are made from shipping containers and they are available in a wide range of sizes. New or used, these containers come in handy when you are shifting from one place to another.

Used containers are another option that you can consider to purchase. They are most sought after, as they are as good as new but cheaper in price. You need to be extra careful when you buy used containers. For example, as other used items, it is advisable that you inspect them thoroughly to ensure that they are in good conditions. Any tear or wear as a result of frequent uses should be minimized and fixable by shipping companies. You can approach any of the shipping companies for any repair work needed to be done on these used containers. To further safeguard your purchase, obtain the certification of the used containers from the dealers.

Another thing that you should be aware of is the marketing scheme of storage ranking that these dealers use. This so-called ranking comes in a grading form such as A, B and so forth. The purpose of such system is to rate the safety level of the containers. In most cases, you can find this rating applied to those containers that are high on demand such as the high cube containers, the flat rack containers, the refrigerated containers etc. Keep in mind that this is just a way for sellers to attract more sales as unlike shipping containers, storage containers are not required to comply with any international shipping standards!

As there are many options for you to pick and choose, the prices of these containers are very competitive. You will also see that from time to time, the wholesalers and the dealers will have some attractive offers to entice you to do business with them. You can find these suppliers on the Internet, as most of them will have their own websites detailing their services, products and the latest offers.

To sum it up before you go shopping for storage containers, you need to do your research properly. This will help you be aware of the options available in terms of containers, prices and suppliers. And please remember: if an offer looks too good to be true, it?s probably not.

Are you looking for storage containers for sale? Don?t look further, as Coronado Mobile Storage is an online store where you can find at the best prices available!

Last Western Gitmo detainee returns to Canada

TORONTO The last Western detainee held at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay returned to Canada Saturday after a decade in custody and was transferred to a maximum security prison where he awaits parole, Canada's public safety minister said Saturday.

Vic Toews said that 26-year-old Omar Khadr arrived at a Canadian military base on a U.S. government plane early Saturday and was transferred to the Millhaven maximum security prison in Bath, Ontario.

The son of an alleged al Qaeda financier, Khadr pleaded guilty in 2010 to killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan and was eligible to return to Canada from Guantanamo Bay last October under terms of a plea deal. Canada's conservative government took almost a year to approve the transfer.

The U.S. Defense Department confirmed the transfer in a statement and said 166 detainees remain in detention at Guantanamo Bay.

Khadr was 15 when he was captured in 2002 in Afghanistan, and has spent a decade at the Guantanamo prison set up on the U.S. naval base in Cuba to hold suspected terrorists after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He received an eight-year sentence in 2010 after being convicted of throwing a grenade that killed Army Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer during a 2002 firefight.

"His head is spinning a bit and it's going to be a real adjustment for him, but at the same time he is so happy to be home," John Norris, Khadr's Canadian lawyer, told The Associated Press.

"He can't believe that it is finally true. He simply can't. For very good reason he was quite fearful that the government would not follow through on its word and he's pinching himself right now not believing that this government has finally kept its word," he said.

Norris said Khadr would be eligible for parole as early as the summer of 2013. He said he's been returned to Canada 10 years too late.

Toews said that the U.S. government initiated Khadr's transfer and suggested that Canada had little choice but to accept him because he is a Canadian citizen. It will be up to Canada's national parole board to release him, Toews said.

"Omar Khadr is a known supporter of the al Qaeda terrorist network and a convicted terrorist," Toews said.

Toews called for "robust conditions of supervision" if Khadr is granted parole. Toews said in his written decision that he reviewed all the files forwarded by the U.S. government and said the parole board should consider his concerns that Omar "idealizes" his father and "appears to deny "Ahmed Khadr's lengthy history of terrorist action and association with al Qaeda."

Toews also said that Omar Khadr's mother and sister "have openly applauded" his father's "crimes and terrorist activities" and noted that Omar has had "little contact with Canadian society and will require substantial management in order to ensure safe integration in Canada."

"I am satisfied the Correctional Service of Canada can administer Omar Khadr's sentence in a manner which recognizes the serious nature of the crimes that he has committed and ensure the safety of Canadians is protected during incarceration," Toews said.

Norris said it is regrettable that the minister is trying to influence the parole board.

"Most of what he has said there is simply not true. It's part of the stereotype of Omar that this government has been disseminating from the beginning," Norris said.

He added that once the Correctional Service "will get to know Omar" they will "recommend appropriate conditions."

What to do if you are forcibly vaccinated. | Fighting Autism and ...

Russell Blaylock, MD - What To
Do If Force Vaccinated
By Dr. Russell Blaylock
8-16-9

Dr Blaylock's List of suggestions on How to Reduce the Toxic Effects of the A/H1N1 Vaccine, is as follows:

1. Number one on the list says Dr Blaylock, is to bring a cold pack with you and place it on the site of the injection as soon as you can, as this will block the immune reaction. Once you get home, continue using a cold pack throughout the day. If you continue to have immune reactions the following day, have cold showers and continue with the cold press.

2. Take fish oil. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), one of the omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements, is a potent immune suppressant. If you take high dose EPA you will be more susceptible to infections, because it is a powerful immune suppressant. However, in the case of an immune adjuvant reaction, you want to reduce it. Studies show that if you take EPA oil one hour before injecting a very powerful adjuvant called lipopolysaccharide (LPS), it would completely block the ability of the LPS to cause brain inflammation. Take a moderate dose everyday and more if needed to tame a cytokine storm.

3.Flavonoids are third on the list, namely curcumin, quercetin, ferulic acid and ellagic acid, particularly in a mixture. The curcumin and quercetin in particular have been found to block the ability of the adjuvants to trigger a long-term immune reaction. If you take it an hour before the vaccination, it should help dampen the immune reactions says Dr Blaylock.

4. Vitamin E, the natural form that is high in gamma-E will help dampen the immune reactions and reduces several of the inflammatory cytokines.

5. An important ingredient on the list is Vitamin C at a dose of 1000 mg, taken four times a day between meals. It is a very potent anti-inflammatory and should be taken in a buffered form, not as absorbic acid, says Dr Blaylock.

6.Also use astaxanthin as it's an anti-inflammatory. According to Dr Blaylock, fatal reactions to vaccines in aboriginal and African children occurred in those who were deficient in carotinoids, like astaxanthin. It is a good protection against the toxic effects of the vaccine.

7. Likewise, it was found that children who were deficient in zinc had a high mortality rate. Zinc is very protective against vaccine toxicity. (Do not use zinc mixed with copper however, as copper is a major trigger of free-radical generation according to Dr Blaylock).

8. Ensure you avoid all immune-stimulating supplements, such as mushroom extracts, whey protein andbeta-glucan.

9. Take a multivitamin-mineral daily ? one that does not contain iron. This multivitamin-mineral is to make sure your body has plenty of B vitamins and selenium. Selenium, said Dr Blaylock, is very important for fighting viral infections and it reduces the inflammatory response to vaccines.

10. Magnesium citrate/malate 500 mg of elemental magnesium two capsules, three times a day. (This was not mentioned during the show, but was posted at Dr Deagle's website,ClayandIron.com).

11. What is very important is vitamin D3, which is the only 'vitamin' the body can manufacture from sunlight (UVB). It is a neural hormone, not really a vitamin says Dr Blaylock and helps if you are over-reacting immunologically by cooling down the reaction. Similarly, if you are under-reacting, it helps to boost your immune response. In addition it also protects against microorganism invasion.

Black people and those in colder climates are particularly deficient, so they will almost certainly require supplementation.

Dr Blaylock recommends that following vaccination it will help to keep the immune reaction under control if:

i) All children get 5,000 units a day for two weeks after the vaccine and then 2,000 a units a day thereafter;

ii) Adults get 20,000 units a day after the vaccine for two weeks, then 10,000 units a day thereafter;

iii) And with that adults should take 500-1000 mg of calcium a day and children under the age of 12 years should take 250 mg a day, as vitamin D works more efficiently in the presence of calcium.

12. Ensure you avoid all mercury-containing seafood or any other sources of mercury, as the heavy metal is a very powerful inducer of autoimmunity, is known to make people more susceptible to viral infections and will be in H1N1 vaccines.

13. Avoid the oils that significantly suppress immunity and increase inflammation - such as corn, safflower, sunflower, soybean, canola and peanut oils.

14. Drink very concentrated white tea at least four times a day. It helps to prevent abnormal immune reactions.

15. Pop parsley and celery in a blender and drink 8 ounces of this mixture twice a day. Dr Blaylock says the parsley is very high in a flavonoid called apigenin and that celery is high inluteolin. Both are very potent in inhibiting autoimmune diseases, particularly the apigenin, so go and plant some parsley in your garden now.

EPA pushes tough asbestos standard for Mont. town

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) ? A proposed standard for federal cleanup of asbestos contamination in a Montana town concludes that even a tiny amount of the material can lead to lung problems ? a benchmark far more rigorous than any in the past and one that the industry says could force expensive and unnecessary cleanups across the country.

The Environmental Protection Agency's new proposal for the northwest Montana town of Libby, where asbestos dust has killed hundreds of people, would be 5,000 times tougher than the standard used in past cleanups addressing airborne asbestos.

W.R. Grace & Co., the Maryland chemical company blamed for pollution from its vermiculite mine that operated for decades, is pushing back against the EPA, suggesting sites across the country could be subjected to costly cleanups.

The ongoing Superfund cleanup in Libby has cost at least $447 million since 1999 and is expected to last several more years. The town of about 3,000 people is about 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

Experts say the EPA proposal is a move long sought by advocates and fiercely resisted by the industry. An EPA board met this week to discuss Grace objections to the proposal, part of a pending risk study for Libby.

"In many respects it would be like banning it, getting it so low," said former assistant U.S. Surgeon General Richard Lemen, who now teaches at Emory University in Atlanta. "EPA is being realistic and saying, 'Look, we know there's asbestos out there and we're not going to get rid of all of it, but let's put our concentration as low as we possibly can.'"

EPA officials didn't respond to questions about the nationwide consequences of its plan. It would declare airborne asbestos concentrations exceeding two-100,000ths of a fiber per cubic centimeter pose a health risk. The EPA has previously taken action when the substance was airborne in amounts greater than one-tenth of a fiber per cubic centimeter.

But the Government Accountability Office has said the cleanup standard could affect some of the 200-plus industrial sites in 40 states that also received asbestos-tainted vermiculite from Grace's Montana mine. More than 20 of those sites, posing the highest health risks, have already been cleaned once. Most of those were processing plants where the mineral was heated at high temperatures so it could expand and be used for insulation in millions of homes.

The GAO and asbestos experts said the EPA risk assessment could force more cleanups. And Grace representatives and health officials said the EPA proposal could apply to other types of asbestos found in communities across the country.

In a letter to the EPA last week, Grace Vice President Karen Ethier said the standard would have "inevitable" consequences beyond Libby.

"That broad application will, in turn, result in enormous, unexpected and unnecessary costs to building owners, farmers and other property holders, including the federal government," Ethier said.

Manufacturing and trade groups and federal agencies including the White House Office of Management and Budget also have questioned the EPA proposal. They said the low threshold falls below even background asbestos levels seen in parts of the country.

Although the sale and manufacture of asbestos-containing materials is tightly regulated, the government has never established a safe level of human exposure for the type of the mineral found in Libby. While there are general cancer-based exposure limits for asbestos set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the EPA proposal for the first time sets a risk level for non-cancer illnesses, such as the debilitating and potentially fatal lung disease asbestosis.

That's a crucial issue in Libby, where the Grace mine and processing plants for three decades left the town coated in asbestos dust that has killed an estimated 400 people and sickened at least 1,700 more. Health experts say the death toll is bound to rise because of the long latency period of asbestos-related illness.

The vermiculite was mined by Grace from a mountain outside town and shipped across the country for use as insulation, fertilizer, in fireproofing material and other commercial products.

The mine closed in 1990.

Health problems first noticed in mine workers have since become pervasive in Libby, affecting spouses who laundered their husbands' dust-covered clothes, generations of residents who played as children near Grace's processing plants and others.

In public testimony and filings with the EPA, Grace has argued that less-severe lung problems considered a sign of asbestos disease can be confused with other health problems, such as obesity. The company maintains that the science used by the EPA to craft its proposal was flawed and has urged the agency to do more research before moving forward.

The air is far cleaner in Libby today than it was when the EPA first arrived, removing thousands of truckloads of contaminated soil and replacing it with clean topsoil. But the agency has acknowledged some people in Libby are still at risk, particularly landscapers and others who stir asbestos-laden soil.

Grace reached a $250 million settlement with the EPA in 2008 to cover government cleanup costs in Libby and the surrounding area. The company remains responsible for cleaning up the mine site. Company executives accused of knowing of the health problems in the town were acquitted of federal criminal charges three years ago.

Arthur Frank, an occupational physician who has testified against Grace in asbestos litigation, said it was "disingenuous" for Grace to now argue against the EPA proposal.

"I don't even see why Grace gets a say in this matter. They're the ones that caused this disaster," said Frank, a professor at Drexel University School of Public Health in Philadelphia. "The situation in Libby specifically shows that minimal pleural disease carries with it significant physiological changes in the lungs."

The EPA has also proposed that a lung condition known as pleural thickening ? caused when asbestos fibers lodge in the lungs and cause scarring ? is an indicator of asbestos exposure that can lead to more harmful lung diseases including asbestosis.

Grace scientists have said medical professionals can easily mistake similar ailments caused by being overweight for asbestos exposure.

The EPA is to make a final decision on the standard for Libby sometime next year.

Earlier this week, the agency's science advisory board reviewing the proposal requested only limited revisions after Grace asked to send it back to scientists for further study.

Agnes Kane, a member of the EPA advisory board and chair of its Libby asbestos panel, said the government and Libby can't afford to wait.

"We certainly can't sit around and wait for these types of studies to be done," Kane said. "We have to use our best scientific judgment. It is necessary to proceed with the remediation of that Superfund site."

5 Ways to Celebrate National Dog Week | Pawcurious: With Pet ...

by Dr. V | Thursday | September 27, 2012 |

Well what do you know, it?s National Dog Week. I know August 26th is National Dog Day, that little factoid is emblazoned in my memory, but I didn?t realize that the fourth week of September is Dog Week and has been for 84 years. In a funny little coincidence, the mother is born on Dog Day and the daughter is born during Dog Week. Clearly this is in our blood. :)

I am so pleased that I will be spending the next two days in the company of animal lovers from around the world at the ACES International Conference in San Diego. I hope I bring back some fantastic stories. And in honor of the occasion, here?s 5 awesome ways you can celebrate this most auspicious of weeks.

1. Teach Your Dog a New Trick

No, it doesn?t have to be THIS fancy. Brody still doesn?t know ?shake?.

2. Take some toys/blankets/food to your local shelter

They always need them! Happy pups are more adoptable, and giving them appropriate stimulation is a big part of that.

3. Foster a pup in need

This is a great way to help a pet without making the lifelong commitment to taking them into the fold (although many people do!) Many dogs that do poorly in a shelter environment blossom under the one on one advantages of living in a home, and foster parents can proudly know they have helped make a special pet that much more adoptable. Petfinder has a great article about fostering pets.

4. Make your dog a special treat

I made EIGHT special treats yesterday, not because I suddenly felt the need to spend seven hours in the kitchen but because I was filming a series of Pawcurious favorites for Pet World Insider. Brody and Koa reaped the benefits and will for the rest of the week. Bronuts and cupcakes and jerky and turbacons and oh, how they were happy.

Dr. V and Robert Semrow from Pet World Insider whip up a Dog Week Celebration Buffet.

5. Take your dog for a walk.

Isn?t it great that this one simple act is enough for your dog to be happy? But if you want to go extra fancy, you can celebrate National Dog Week and National Rollerskating Week (it?s that too!) at the same time and go rollerjoring. Oh, yeah. Seriously, you need to watch this person fly:

On second thought, helmetless = closed head injury waiting to happen. Maybe canicross would be a better choice.

What?s your favorite way to celebrate canines?

iCloud.com Using Google Maps - Business Insider

Despite Apple dropping Google Maps in iOS 6, iCloud.com is still using its mapping data to track down missing iPhones, iPads and laptops.

Buster Heine from Cult Of Mac discovered this via Reddit and we confirmed that iCloud.com does indeed still rely on Google Maps.

The Find My iPhone app doesn't use Google Maps, but rather data from TomTom and its other partners. Still, both maps correctly locate our test device.

Dell Inspiron 15R-5520

The most recent iteration of the Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 ($599 list) offers the latest third-generation Intel processor, a newly designed chassis, and generally good performance for just under $600. This 15-inch desktop replacement laptop isn't loaded with features but it does provide Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity and has a switchable lid. However, its battery life could be better and its shiny screen can be distracting.

Design
Like last year's model, the new Inspiron 15R-5520 is done up with a plastic lid and smooth rounded corners. Dell calls the finish "Moon Silver" but it looks more like a brushed black metal finish than anything else. A Dell logo sits squarely in the middle of the lid, and a band of metal trim envelops both the lid and the base. If you want to change it up a little you can remove the lid and replace it with a Fire Red, Lotus Pink, or Peacock Blue colored lid, available from Dell for $28.49 each.

The chassis measures 1.3 by 14.9 by 9.9 inches, similar to the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS) , but at 6.05 pounds the Inspiron 15R-5520 is heavier than the Sony E15 by a little more than half a pound. The brushed metal keyboard deck is relatively smudge resistant and feels cool to the touch. It holds a chiclet-style keyboard with good-sized black keys that are responsive and offer just the right amount of flex without feeling mushy. You don't get a dedicated number pad on this model but you do get three Dashboard keys at the top of the deck. One key launches the Windows Mobility Center where you can change system settings, another opens the Dell Audio app where you can tweak audio settings, and the third is user programmable. The recessed touchpad matches the keyboard deck and provides plenty of room for accurate gesture control and the two oversized mouse buttons are whisper-quiet.

The Inspiron 15R-5520's 15.6-inch display has a 1,366-by-768 resolution and a glossy coating that will make you feel like you're staring into a mirror when the screen is dark or during scenes when there's a dark background. That said, the panel delivers a bright picture with vibrant colors and sharp image detail. It loses its luster when viewed from an angle, however; colors appear washed out when viewed from the side and the screen gets significantly darker if you tilt the panel too far backward.

Features
All four of the included USB ports are of the 3.0 kind, and one of them is a PowerShare port that allows you to charge USB devices while the system is turned off. Video outputs include HDMI and VGA ports, an Ethernet port, and headphone and microphones jacks. Wireless features include 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios, and the optical drive is a tray loading DVD multi-drive.

Rounding out the feature set is a 500GB hard drive with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. Also installed is Dell Stage, an icon-driven interface that provides easy access to photos, videos, music, and Dell's DataSafe and Support Center utilities. There's a fair amount of bloatware installed as well, including trial versions of McAfee Security Center and Nero, an eBay link, and Windows Live Essentials. Dell covers the Inspiron 15R-5520 with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 Fueled by Intel's 2.5GHz Core i5-3210M Ivy Bridge processor paired with 6GB of system memory, the Inspiron 15R-5520 scored 2,645 on our PCMark 7 benchmark test. That's pretty much in line with the 2,495 points scored by the Sony VAIO E15 and significantly higher than the 2,255 points of the Asus U56E-BBL6 ($699.99 list, 4 stars), which uses a second-generation Core i5 processor. On our multimedia tests, the Inspiron 15R-5520's Handbrake (1:41) and Photoshop (3:53) scores were identical to those of the Dell Inspiron 17R-7520 and very close to the Sony VAIO E15. Once again, the second-generation-based Asus U56E-BBL6 trailed the pack.

Dell Inspiron 15R-5520

The integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU performed as expected; it managed to churn out 24 frames per second (fps) on both our medium-quality (1,024-by-768) Lost Planet 2 DX9 and Crysis DX10 gaming tests, but it couldn't handle the high-quality settings at its native resolution (1,366-by-768).

The Inspiron 15R-5520 couldn't complete the MobileMark 2007 battery test so we used our anecdotal 10-hour DVD rundown test. It lasted 4 hours 29 minutes, but can't be directly compared to MobileMark scores.

The Dell Inspiron 15R-5520 is a capable desktop replacement laptop that delivers solid third-generation Core i5 power at a wallet-friendly price. It keeps pace with the competition performance-wise and is equipped with a generous selection of wireless options, but its shiny display and narrow viewing angles hold it back. If you require more storage and an extra 2GB of system memory, consider our Editors' Choice for budget laptops, the Sony VAIO E15 (SVE15116FXS). You'll have to part with an extra $150 though.
