NEW YORK (AP) ? The effects of a slowing global economy caught up to Deere & Co. in its fiscal third quarter, as its net income rose 11 percent but fell well short of Wall Street's expectations.
Deere cut its revenue prediction for the year, and investors reacted swiftly. Shares dropped more than 7 percent.
Delays in production lines also hurt the world's largest producer of agricultural equipment. Ongoing drought in the Midwest had a minimal impact, executives said in a conference call with analysts.
The Moline, Ill., company, said Wednesday that it earned $788 million, or $1.98 per share for the quarter ended July 31, compared with $712.3 million, or $1.69 per share for the same period last year. Analysts expected $2.31 per share in the most recent quarter, according to FactSet.
Revenue rose 15 percent to $9.59 billion, missing analysts' average prediction of $9.61 billion.
Sales of tractors and other farm equipment, by far its biggest segment, rose 14 percent to $7.27 billion. Deere also makes a wide range of construction and forestry equipment, including backhoes and excavators. That segment's sales jumped 23 percent to $1.66 billion.
While those two segments improved markedly from a year ago, growth has slowed. In last year's third-quarter, sales of agricultural and turf equipment rose 22 percent and construction and forestry equipment revenue leaped 34 percent.
Sales from Deere's financial services segment, where it offers crop insurance, loans and other aid, rose 3 percent to $565 million.
Since it touches many important markets, it provides a unique look into the state of the U.S. and global economies. Deere's earnings have held up better in recent quarters than other U.S. companies that are considered economic bellwethers, such as United Parcel Service Inc. and 3M Co.
Deere said demand in once red-hot international markets like China and India cooled down. China demand is also weakening in part due to a delay in government subsidies reaching customers.
New products with more complicated technology slowed North American production by up to two weeks in the quarter. That, combined with an extremely early harvest, meant some farmers didn't get new machines in time. Canceled orders for new machines hurt the quarter and are partly to blame for a lower full-year revenue forecast.
Deere sees net income of $3.1 billion for the year ending in October, down from $3.35 billion forecast three months ago. Analysts estimate about $3.4 billion.
The ongoing drought nightmare for U.S. farmers is seen as a strong driver of growth for Deere in the next fiscal year starting in November. Although the prolonged drought has shrunk crop estimates and slightly affected demand for new Deere equipment, Deere said continued robust demand for corn, soybeans and other food should keep prices high and business strong.
In midday trading, Deere shares fell $6.02, or 7.5 percent, to $74.11.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 14, 2012) ? Soil microbes are impulsive. So much so that they help plants face the challenges of a rapidly changing climate.
Jen Lau and Jay Lennon, Michigan State University biologists studied how plants and microbes work together to help plants survive the effects of global changes, such as increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations, warmer temperatures and altered precipitation patterns. The results, appearing in the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that microbes in the ground not only interact with plants, but they also prompt them to respond to environmental changes.
"We found that these changes in the plants happen primarily because of what global changes do to the belowground microbes rather than the plant itself," said Lau, who works at MSU's Kellogg Biological Station. "Drought stress affects microbes, and they, in turn, drive plants to flower earlier and help plants grow and reproduce when faced with drought."
The team conducted a multi-generational experiment that manipulated environmental factors above and below ground while paying close attention to the interaction between the plants and microbes in the soil. Close examination of this particle partnership revealed some interesting results.
Researchers already knew that drought stress reduced plant growth and altered their life cycle. The team was surprised, though, to observe that the plants were slow to evolve and, instead, microbes did most of the work of helping plants survive in new, drier environments. This happened because the microbes were quick to adapt to the changing environment.
This newfound aspect of their relationship gives plants an additional strategy for survival, Lau said.
"When faced with environmental change, plants may not be limited to traditional 'adapt or migrate' strategies," she said. "Instead, they may also benefit from a third approach -- interacting with complementary species such as the diverse microbes found in the soil."
Lau and Lennon's research is funded in part by MSU AgBioResearch.

Most people describe heel pain as sharp, burning or sometimes bruise like pain when pressure is placed on the foot. This can subside over time as you walk and move around but usually some degree of pain is always present. Heel pain is usually worst after periods of rest such as first thing in the morning or after a period of sitting or lying down.? Heel pain is generally caused by Plantar Fasciitis. The plantar fascia is the main ligament that runs underneath your foot. Imagine a thick rubber band attached to your heel that is stretched under your foot and connected to the ball of your foot just behind your toes. This keeps your foot aligned and supports the foot?s arch and surrounding muscles. Heel pain is the result when the ligament and surrounding tissue becomes irritated, inflamed or overworked. There are many things that can lead to heel pain including vigorous exercise, standing many hours a day, significant weight gain, or improperly fitted with excessively low or high arches that don?t provide proper support.
This lack of support can lead to over pronation of the foot which is the most common underlying cause of heel pain. Over pronation occurs when the foot rolls inward while walking or running. This action places extra pressure on the arch of the foot and stretches the ?rubber ban.? This is caused by poor alignment of the bones of the foot. Excessive wear on the inside portion of an individual?s shoe soles is an indicator of over pronation. While this may sound like a complicated issue it can be easily prevented by ensuring proper alignment of the foot.
The easiest way to prevent heel pain is with the use of orthotics. Docpods Orthotics provides a way to properly align and provide support to the arch of the foot. If you are a chronic sufferer of heel pain orthotics can put a stop to over stretching and reduces strain on the plantar fascia thus alleviating pain. Docpods are functional and efficient in providing the much needed support that active feet need.
Whether you prefer high heels, running shoes or boots, Docpods has orthotics to help your aching feet. They even offer a line of children?s orthotics for your active youngsters.
Heel pain relief is easy with Docpods orthotics. They?re an inexpensive solution to a chronic and painful issue so please visit http://www.docpods.com/heel-spur-and-plantar-fasciitis today and enjoy happier, healthier feet.

Two ethnic Tibetan men set themselves on fire together in southwest China to protest Beijing's rule, causing clashes between residents and security forces, rights groups said on Tuesday.
A monk and former monk set themselves alight Monday in Aba town in Sichuan province, sparking a protest that authorities quelled by beating demonstrators with batons, Free Tibet and the International Campaign for Tibet said.
Additional security forces have been deployed to Aba, the site of several such self-immolations and attempts, said London-based Free Tibet.
One man, whose name was given as Lungtok, died and the other, Tashi, was taken to hospital with severe injuries, it said in a statement.
Nearly 50 people have set themselves on fire in recent months in Tibetan-inhabited areas of China in protest at repressive government policies, according to Free Tibet.
Officials from the Aba police and government, reached by telephone, denied knowledge of the latest incident.
Ethnic Tibetans in Tibet and surrounding regions have long-resented Chinese rule, saying it has curbed their religious freedom and diluted their culture through an influx of Han Chinese, the country's main ethnic group.
China counters that Tibetans enjoy religious freedom and have enjoyed improved living standards thanks to China's economic expansion.
The Tibetan capital Lhasa saw violent anti-Chinese government protests in 2008 that later spread to other areas inhabited by Tibetans. Authorities have kept the city under tight security since then.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Olympic champion Gabby Douglas basked in the "Tonight" spotlight and the admiration of fellow guest Michelle Obama, but the teenager already is thinking ahead to 2016.
Host Jay Leno, who noted that Douglas' last name was an anagram for "USA gold," asked Monday if the gymnast intended to compete in the next Summer Games, in Rio de Janeiro.
"Oh, definitely," she replied, reaffirming previous statements.
The 16-year-old looked like a winner, dressed in a gold metallic skirt and a fitted, black motorcycle jacket. Her hair, worn in a utilitarian bun during the Olympics, was gathered in a chic ponytail.
Her best accessory were the two gold medals she carried onstage, handing one to Leno and the other to Mrs. Obama for closer inspection.
"I don't even deserve to hold this," Leno said later as he returned it.
Douglas became the third consecutive U.S. athlete and first African-American to win the all-around title. She and her teammates gave the U.S. its first Olympic title in women's gymnastics since 1996.
Leno asked Douglas about meeting Prince William's wife, who offered her congratulations to the team, including Aly Raisman.
"It was definitely an exciting experience. ... Aly told her she liked her fashion, and she was like, 'Well, I love your leos (leotards),'" Douglas said.
She admitted indulging in post-Olympics fast food to the wrong person: healthy eating advocate Mrs. Obama, who teased the champion.
"You're setting me back, Gabby," Obama told her.
"Sorry!" replied the athlete, who confessed to chowing down on a McDonalds' breakfast sandwich to celebrate her victories.
But she impressed Mrs. Obama and Leno with a detailed description of how, starting at age 6, she learned to navigate the 4-inch-wide balance beam.
The host wanted to know if the dream of winning matched the reality.
"I think it's very different, and when I mean 'different,' it's in a better way," Douglas replied. "I mean, I never thought I would be doing the show with the first lady, or even you, Jay."
Leno started to reply, when Mrs. Obama jumped in.
"Even you too, Jay!" she said.
On another sports-related topic, Leno put the first lady on the spot about what he called "this whole kiss cam thing" at a recent basketball game.
Last month, she and President Barack Obama were at a U.S. Olympic men's basketball team exhibition game in Washington when the arena's "Kiss Cam" panned to them. She appeared to shake her head "no" to a smooch.
That's not what happened, Michelle Obama told Leno.
"I had just walked in and sat down, and I just saw my face on the Jumbotron. And I'm still a little embarrassed. ... I didn't see the 'kiss cam' part," she said.
After the couple was booed, daughter Malia set them straight.
"She was just disgusted with us," Obama recounted. "She said, 'Why didn't you kiss?'"
The 13-year-old quickly proved her skills as a problem-solver.
"I've arranged for you to get another chance on the kiss cam," she told her parents, according to the first lady. The president delivered, giving the first lady a big kiss on the lips and adding a peck on the forehead for good measure.
Then Leno turned serious, asking Obama what she's proudest of in her husband's first term.
"Truly, health reform," including protection for those with pre-existing conditions," she said.

Begin your career the right way!
This week, thousands of students will enter the hallowed halls of colleges across the country. For many, once the?excitement of moving into dorms and registering for the requisite classes has subsided, collegians will settle into pursuing job opportunities. Whether a necessity, or a means for generating work experience for their resumes, entering the workforce ? from searching for jobs to the on-boarding experience ? can be a daunting task for rookie employees.
For college students, there are some key imperatives to help them become successful job seekers: ?streamline the job search; create a flawless cover letter and resume; prepare for the interview; ask the right questions before you accept the position; give an award-winning performance at work; and, treasure your mentors and advocates.
?
?
Streamline the job search
Applying for any-old-job is a strategy that can lead to a disappointing workplace experience. Streamlining the job search is the first step in gaining temporary or long-term employment. Job seekers typically visit online job sites first to find opportunities. In addition to surfing popular sites, such as DCJobs.com or Career Builder, there are a number of websites tailored to specific industries. For example, CareerMD is an online career source for physicians and residents looking for jobs in the health care industry. The American Marketing Association job site lists thousands of opportunities in marketing and communications. Another site, the American Institute of Architects, lists architecture opportunities spanning internships to project managers.
Paid jobs, apprenticeships or internships in a desired field, such as technology, marketing, and business, are often advertised at the campus career services office. Recruiters who advertise jobs and internships with career services typically have a pre-existing relationship with the office, which can be an advantage to college job seekers because of that rapport. Many campus career centers allow students to register for online alerts for posted positions, workshops, and campus job fairs.
Create a flawless cover letter or resume
Before applying for an internship or job, students should create detailed, flawless cover letters and resumes. These documents are an introduction to potential employers, who critique the applicants? experience, soft skills, and specialized skills before deciding if they even want to bring candidates in for interviews.
Recruiters typically spend less than a minute to peruse a cover letter or resume, so it is important to structure your cover letter and resume, list only relevant information, and proofread everything. Structuring your cover letter or resume covers everything from ensuring your documents are the appropriate length to layout and font.

Visit specialized career sites for jobs
The cover letter expresses the candidate?s interest in a position. It also details a few highlights that complement the position for which a college job seeker is applying, and lists specialized skills, such as web design, HTML code, certifications, and foreign language proficiency. It should also include the person who recommended that the job seeker apply for the position, if applicable.
A college student?s resume should be one page ? the average person does not have enough relevant job experience to justify a two-page curriculum vitae.? Highlight the principal tasks (primary work responsibilities) for each job or internship. Do not use informal fonts and large pitch for your resume. Stick to fonts like Times New Roman or Arial in 12 pitch. Ask a trusted friend, parent, or mentor to proofread your cover letter and resume before submitting it ? errors will almost guarantee that a potential employer will not call you for an interview.
Finally, be sure to follow applicant instructions the company lists. If candidates are asked not to call the company about the position, respect the recruiter?s process. If candidates are allowed to call the prospective employer, only ask questions that are not covered in the position announcement. For example, if the job announcement states that travel is required, do not ask (before or during the interview) if traveling is expected.

Well just how can we get tired of seeing these. Keep em coming.Bernie i know what a knurling tool is but how do you get it to knurl around the edges of the acorn hat. That extra touch is a winner. I agree with why they sell so well heck they so hard to resist. Your birds are excellent proportion.

There are a lot of men that actually take the initiative and buy lingerie for the lady they love. While there are a number of men who have this task down to a science and have no trouble buying lingerie for their wives and girlfriends, most men find this difficult especially if they are shopping for the first time. And this is why there are several shopping tips men can keep in mind when they visit popular websites or online dealers like Maryholland. The biggest challenge in men is they do not have an idea what they will get their wives or girlfriends. Rather than ask her directly, it is best that you take a peek into her lingerie drawer or closet to get an idea of the type of lingerie she wears or likes. Take note of the colors and materials her lingerie are made of so you can get an idea what her tastes are and choose one that she would really like.
The same thing can be done if you plan to buy sexy swimwear for her. You need to check the type of swimsuits she has a lot of and what colors she favors so you can be sure your gift will be very appreciated. This way, when you begin to shop around in Maryholland, you will not feel overwhelmed and guess at what your lady love will like. One other important thing to take note of is the size of lingerie and swimsuit she wears. Check the labels of the lingerie and the bathing suits in her closet to get an idea. This is the best way you can avoid buying something that will either be too big or too small for her to wear. On the other hand, if you?re shopping on a budget, you need to consider buying them online.
Among the reasons behind this is online dealers often sell their products at more affordable prices. Since website such as that of Maryholland get the swimsuits and lingerie they sell directly from the manufacturers, they are able to get the items at lower prices and pass on the savings to their customers. This way, you are able to buy the swimsuit or linger your lady love will like without spending a lot of money. In addition, you are able to shop around a number of online stores quick enough, considering you can access information easily online. You can also check out several product reviews and testimonials posted by fellow consumers that help you ensure the quality of the swimwear and lingerie you are going to buy.

Shropshire in England is a peaceful holiday destination in its West Midland regions. Ideal for people who prefer the rustic air better than the rambunctious activities of beaches and metropolises, this county is the perfect destination for nature lovers and creative artists. The countryside setting, with greenery-blanketed hills, deep valleys bowels and typical English historical architectures make the land ideal for a tentative exile. Noting the high count of tourists the place is receiving lately, a lot of bed and breakfast Oswestry accommodations have sprung up within its limits. People who are traveling with limited budget often seek economic, yet comfortable accommodation during their holidays. The bed and breakfast Shrewsbury establishments are one of the most pocket-friendly lodging options to be found in England.
Those who are new to the term, it is a small lodging hotel, often referred to as B&B, like an inn that allows boarders to stay overnight. The latter part of the name suggests that the boarders are served breakfast in the morning, whereas the former part signifies the bed given to sleep at night. Bed and breakfast Shrewsbury establishments are some of the fundamental accommodations to exist. Even though the ritual of bed and breakfast was religiously maintained, presently the bed and breakfast Oswestry inns also dole out other meals.
Self-catering, these inns are often run by families in their private homes. People living around the countryside, or homeowners who have a spare property around the rural locations usually run bed and breakfast Oswestry accommodations to make some money. They usually have less than ten bedrooms and do not exhibit the commercial hotel design. This is one of the salient reasons why bed and breakfast Shrewsbury accommodations are favored by the vacationers. They are generally less crowded because of limited availability of accommodation and have the ambiance of a home.
Being self-catering, you can help yourself as you do at home without having to be under unfriendly surveillance of a liveried waiter or attendant. Completely affordable, the bed and breakfast Shrewsbury accommodations are preferred for their farm-fresh meals and home-like aura. Perfectly suited to those who are out to taste the real culture of Britain, the establishments offer a less raucous and simplistic experience of life that people of that part of the world live. The bed and breakfast Oswestry holiday homes have, however, improved radically from their earlier conditions.
The most visited homes are located in prospective locations in the county where access to the airports and other important points of England are possible at the minimum investment of time. Quiet and peaceful, B&Bs are called family hotels for their amicable atmosphere and hospitable ambiance. Shropshire presently houses a variety of such accommodations depending upon the requirements of the travelers. Special arrangements for disabled, pet owners, vegetarian customers, etc. are made to suit the variable needs of the visitors. There are special students discount hotels where scholastic people can lodge in at a slashed off tariff rate for greater savings.
Looking or a bed and breakfast Oswestry arrangement in Shropshire? Hollies farm is a popular bed and breakfast Shrewsbury accommodation that offers an enjoyable lodging experience.

Update: Did we say 18? We meant 81, but forgot to take a grab, so officially we'll have to make do with a top score of 34.

DeNoonWebMD Health News Reviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD March 23, 2011 ? Exciting findings from an early-stage clinical trial offer new hope to patients with Duchenne?s muscular dystrophy, the most common but incurable and devastating form of muscular dystrophy. Patients who received three months of weekly injections with PRO051 had a modest improvement in their ability to walk, reports a research team led by Judith C. van Deutekom, PhD, vice president for discovery at Prosensa Therapeutics, which funded the study. ?The patients are still on the product, and anecdotal evidence suggests they are functioning better in daily life,? van Deutekom tells WebMD. Duchenne?s muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a very common form of the disease, striking about one in every 3,500 boys worldwide. It?s a recessive genetic defect, carried by mothers but almost always striking boys. The defect is in the gene coding for dystrophin, a protein with a major role in muscle function. Normal dystrophin acts like a shock absorber for muscle cells. The defective dystrophin in DMD leads to muscle damage and degeneration, says muscular dystrophy NLM Roger W. Kula, MD, head of the neuromuscular clinic at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. ?Duchenne?s patients have progressive wasting of muscle,? Kula, who was not involved in the PRO051 study, tells WebMD. ?The disease affects walking at age 2 to 5 years, confines patients to wheelchair by age 9 to 12, and results in death from age 20 to 30. It is horrible.? Different patients with DMD have different mutations in the gene that codes for dystrophin. One of the most common mutations ? seen in about 13% of DMD patients ? is at a site called exon 51. PRO051 is a string of nucleic acids called an antisense oligonucleotide. When the body is decoding the dystrophin gene, the drug causes the mRNA that is ?reading? the gene to skip over the mutated exon 51. The result is a dystrophin protein that isn?t exactly normal, but which works well enough. Muscular dystrophy patients who have naturally occurring dystrophin like this have a much milder form of the disease known as Becker?s muscular dystrophy. In their study, van Deutekom and colleagues enrolled 12 DMD patients at an average age of 9 years. In the first phase of the study, they gave increasing doses of the drug to sets of three patients. There were no serious safety issues, and patients given higher doses showed evidence of making functional dystrophin. This led to a second phase in which all 12 patients received weekly abdominal injections of PRO051 at the highest dose tested. ?We noticed a modest improvement, which is quite remarkable for patients with this disease, in the distance they can walk in six minutes,? van Deutekom says. ?The dystrophin probably accumulated over time in their muscles and led to the observed improvement.? 1 | 2 Next Page > Further Reading: Duchenne?s Muscular Dystrophy Advance Stem Cells May Treat Muscular Dystrophy Creatine May Help Muscular Dystrophy Muscular Dystrophy Diagnosis & Treatment Symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy New Drug May Treat Muscular Dystrophy See All Muscular Dystrophy Topics Muscular Dystrophy Home Medical Reference Features News Archive Top 12 Topics 1. I can't remember if it was a chuckle or more of an eye-rolling sort of snort, but when the headlines crossed that Goldman Sachs (GS) would not face criminal charges for its fiendish trading actions during the subprime debt meltdown, my reaction was certainly not one of surprise. And I'm not alone.
Like it or not, the bare-knuckled, high-stakes world of proprietary trading is a dark and dangerous place. It operates under a system of rules that is known to be plagued by moral hazards, pocked with ethical pitfalls, and shrouded in a cloud of stench ? but it is also a very, very hard turf to score a conviction.
"Despite the fact that they're not consistent with what we take to be right and wrong, and despite the fact they're taking the other side of trades with their clients and doing things that we suspect are wrong, the truth is you can't prove it wrong under any law, and so they're off the hook," says Hugh Johnson, chairman and CIO of Hugh Johnson Advisors. What's more, he adds in the attached video, so are quite a few other prop traders too.
In case your memory of events from five years ago has faded, Goldman Sachs was called before Congress to explain how it could simultaneously package and sell bundles of dubious mortgages to clients while also betting against them ? or shorting them ? at the same time.
Conflicted? You betcha. But criminal? Not so much. And that's why industry veterans like Johnson predict that proprietary trading is likely to continue in its current form, even as the regulatory noose tightens around so many other areas of the banking and financial services business years after the perceived wrongdoings originally occurred. It's essentially a regulatory hangover, and Johnson says it's the post-crisis norm, not the exception.
"[Belated regulation] always comes, unfortunately, too late," he says, adding that no matter which loopholes are closed or which laws are tightened, another financial or speculative crisis will surely happen again. In the meantime, we have to deal with the headwinds and after-effects of these new dictates.
"It's very much a drag on the recovery," he says. "It's the same kind of thing we saw in the decade of the 1930s."
As much as he doesn't like seeing Goldman and others "get off the hook," he's mindful that our history is full of financial crisis and strife. In fact, while he's not interested in owning Goldman Sachs here, he does say that JPMorgan (JPM) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are somewhat undervalued and worth a look.

German telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom said Thursday it was sticking to its full-year target for stable earnings after clocking up a solid performance in the second quarter.
"We recorded stable earnings and a solid growth trend free cash flow in the second quarter of 2012. On the back of this performance, the board of management has confirmed its guidance for the full year," Deutsche Telekom said in a statement.
Full-year underlying profit was therefore projected to come out at around 18 billion euros ($22 billion), compared with 18.7 billion euros in 2011.
"Plans for a minimum dividend payment of 0.70 euros per share remain unchanged," it added.
"We are keeping our word and providing a good deal of reliability to the market with very solid figures," said chief executive Rene Obermann.
"We do of course continue to face a number of challenges, but we are performing very respectably compared with our competitors," he said.
In the second quarter alone, Deutsche Telekom's bottom-line net profit jumped by 76.4 percent to 614 million euros.
But that was largely because the previous year's figure were undercut by special factors, the group explained.
Adjusted net profit declined by 13.9 percent to 819 million euros a result of charges connected with its US unit, T-Mobile USA.
Adjusted underlying profit, as measured by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) edged up by 0.2 percent to 4.697 billion euros for the period from April to June, while sales slipped by 0.7 percent to 14.379 billion euros.

Black Drink, a caffeinated brew of toasted leaves and twigs of the holly plant, was apparently popular far from any holly. Cynthia Graber reports

Tea and coffee are drunk worldwide, far beyond their original ecological niches. Now it looks like another caffeinated beverage also gained popularity far from its home.
Archaeologists call it Black Drink?a caffeinated brew of toasted leaves and twigs of the holly plant. It was imbibed, often ceremonially, in many regions of the Americas. Researchers say they?ve found the earliest trace of Black Drink?in a region that doesn?t grow holly.
They investigated Cahokia, a large pre-Columbian political body. It encompassed floodplains and hills near today?s Saint Louis. It?s tough to find plant matter, so scientists searched for traces of theobromine, caffeine and ursolic acid in ceramics in the right proportion?a sort of chemical signature for holly. And they were able to date Black Drink back to about the year 1050, almost a thousand years ago. But the nearest holly grows hundreds of miles away.
The findings are in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Patricia L. Crown et al., Ritual Black Drink consumption at Cahokia]
The researchers say this is the earliest evidence of Black Drink consumption. And that Black Drink was traded for ritual consumption far from where it was grown. Much like our morning cup of joe.

Droga5 has plenty of time to celebrate its Coke Zero win, as the new agency's first big campaign isn't expected until March.
The New York shop won U.S. creative responsibilities on the brand after a review. The other finalists were Ogilvy & Mather, 72andSunny and Leo Burnett, according to sources.
The assignment includes both traditional and digital marketing, a Coke representative said. Media spending on the brand totaled around $35 million last year, according to Nielsen. That figure, however, doesn't include online spending.
Droga5 succeeds Crispin Porter + Bogusky on the business. Crispin, which?handled the brand since its U.S. launch in 2005, did not defend.
The pitch contenders were all familiar to parent company Coca-Cola, having worked for the beverage giant in the past. In fact, Droga5 joined the Coke roster about two years ago when it landed a global assignment on Vitaminwater.
Although significant, the Coke Zero account won't be the biggest at Droga5. The agency's largest client is Kraft, for which it handles seven brands, followed by Prudential. Still, a brand that advertises during NFL and NCAA basketball games gives the shop a major stage on which to perform.?

Thanks to considerable regulatory efforts making it extremely difficult for forex brokers to operate in the US the number of forex brokers keeps going down. Forex Club today announced to its employees that it is going to downgrade its license to FCM, basically meaning it will no longer be an RFED and will not be accepting retail forex traders directly. Forex Club will focus on institutional business and will probably partner as an IB with another RFED on retail business. As part of this focus change Michael Klena, formerly E*Trade, was appointed as US CEO. This is similar to the action taken by Easy Forex last year.
Forex Club, if we analyze it correctly, is going to put the regulatory capital to work in some other jurisdiction where it is going to concentrate most of its retail focus. With the NFA registration gone FC will probably get regulated in another reputable?jurisdiction?such as the UK or Australia. FC may acquire a well positioned firm or make a huge marketing push to establish itself in the new market.
It?s sad to see one more retail broker depart the business however at least Forex Club will remain in the US through retail IB partnership and with major focus on institutional market.
FC however is not going to be the last one in withdrawing as a retail forex broker from the US market. We are aware of another broker that is itching closer to the same decision and this should be announced within the next six months.
