The field of company changed once the Web was a major aspect of lives. With more people investing most of their existence online , marketing and advertising is starting its shift coming from the real world towards the digital. To remain competing, your company will be needing outstanding Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategies that only Los Angeles SEO companies can give.

The return of aimed marketing

Throughout the reign of conventional media - television, newspapers and magazines and radio - one of the ideas of advertising and marketing would have been to attract the biggest viewers achievable because of its extensive reach. The Net is alleged to enjoy a larger reach as compared to even television at its height. Because of the power provided by browsers, though, people who search the net can pick exactly where they go and what to do.

You will find millions, of sites in the web, but they're each contesting to get interest.

Perhaps the reason behind this could be the search engines like google. As they say, whenever you want to find a thing, you Google it. You input the word or term that best matches what you are searching for, and the search engines like google check out the websites to learn what type probably has what you need. You can't get as focused in marketing and advertising as that. Specifically in high population density locations such as the cities on the West Coast, transmitting over the Net through banner ad campaigns and pop-ups just isn't adequate.

This is the reason numerous businesses use Los Angeles SEO as the major part of their Online marketing strategies. Chances are, people won't learn about you from the websites they frequent, particularly if that website has practically nothing to do with all your work.

They are going to find you by search engines like google. By using Los Angeles SEO strategies, your internet site will be one of the first they view.

A brand new sort of word-of-mouth

Individuals can still learn about you online, though. Whether or not they were designed to generally be that sort of a carrier or not, social media networks like Facebook and Twitter are becoming origins of site traffic and attention. This is certainly word-of-mouth, and the pass-on potential of print mass media, only virtually.

Today, among the easiest ways to at the very least increase buzz for whatever you can market - whether it is a thought, initiative, goods and services - would be to have people "Like", "Share" or "Retweet" your message. One Facebook or Twitter account with an above average quantity of pull with online communities will get you thousands, if not millions, of page views.

This is the reason Los Angeles social media advertising models also figure conspicuously in online plans. For as few as just one content of 150 characters (the actual size of a standard Twitter note), your page visits and referrals can unexpectedly bounce high. Many online strategies have gone from obscure to trending subject all as a result of a well-placed retweet or Facebook post.

Might Your Pet Cat be Worshiped by Ancient Egyptians ...

The next time you sip your morning coffee while watching your favorite pet cat methodically groom himself for your day, consider this: your pet cat might have been admired, actually worshiped by Egyptians thousands of years ago. These ancient Egyptians were a technologically and intellectually sophisticated community for their time. What exactly about your dog could they discover so worthy of adoration? To better appreciate this race?s incredible allegiance to their four footed pets, one must have a moderate comprehension of history. The Egyptians wisely utilized the waters from the Nile River, and its surrounding rich land to cultivate many different plants. These periods when the crops failed, the economy suffered unbelievably, and thousands of people went without food. This ancient culture relied greatly upon the wild, or feral cats of their time to guard their valued grains and harvested crops from illness carrying mice and rats. Using their graceful limbs, long, big eyes, and smooth sort, these agile felines were perfectly worthy of catch vermin. It?s proposed that awful effects were eliminated just from the cats maintaining the local rat population in check. While feral cats were doing their part to protect crucial Egyptian grains and produce (in addition to the local economy), inside their cities and villages, domesticated cats offered another critical purpose. Household cats were bread because of their abilities to protect their precious owners from mice, snakes, and other harmful insects. Cats were recognized to risk their lives for their masters, attacking and killing venomous cobras to safeguard their loved ones. They held young children from injury, and roamed the houses at night, using teeth and sharp paws to safeguard the premises. The cleverness, genius, speed, and grace of the Egyptian?s domesticated cats prompted this old culture to associate them with the goddess Bast. Bast?s soul was often personified in feline look, and was often seen in the form of figurines, paintings, and sculptures of the period. Sometimes Bast was indicated with the face and head of a feline. On other occasions she was shown as a wise, royal cat. Bast was ultimately given her own beautiful temple to ensure that pilgrims could go revere her soul in her own place of worship. Inside this structure, the priests of Bast cared for the numerous temple cats that dwelled in the sanctity of this sacred place. Over time, the sacred practice of mummification was extended to cats, for their owners adored their owners, admired their owners, and wished to be with them even in the afterlife. In modern times, cats are still worth addressing to society. As the ancient Egyptians precisely understood, there are numerous benefits to having cats in the house as well as in the community. Even though most cats in modern society aren?t needed to save their masters from fatal cobras, many have already been known to (with regards to the local environment) protect against infection, scorpions, poisonous spiders, and rattlesnakes holding mice and rats. Several facilities, vineyards, and orchards proceed to welcome cats for their capability to retain the local bug populations.Scientists have spent vast amounts of money attempting to uncover the secrets of feline nocturnal vision. Cats? nerves, reflexes, and musculoskeletal systems are presently being examined with the hope of making medical advancements that could be of benefit to mankind. Hundreds of years from today, we will be learning about our feline friends, and benefiting from their presence in lots of ways. Now would an old Egyptian have worshiped my pet cat? It is quite possible. Could my pet be worshiped by me? Maybe, if she could reorganize my DVD selection, tidy up your kitchen, and arrange my computer table. I would absolutely have to contemplate it

U.S. loves cops and firefighters - but not their pensions

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pharmacist Michael Nastro is full of admiration for how police responded to a deadly robbery in his suburban New York neighborhood in 2011.

A gunman walked into a pharmacy near his town on Long Island, killed four people and fled with a stash of painkillers. Police in the area, which is part of wealthy Suffolk County, best known for the exclusive Hamptons beach towns, boosted patrols and gave advice on what to do if the robber hit again. They caught him three days after the shooting.

But Nastro, 50, admits he's torn about police officers' pay and retirement benefits. "I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't conflicted," he said. "I want good police work, but I'm a taxpayer too. There's got to be a middle ground."

The average annual pension for Suffolk County cops who have retired since 2007 was $86,702, according to figures from the Manhattan Institute, a public policy think tank, against $37,270 for other county employees, excluding teachers. The county, facing a three-year deficit of $530 million, declared a fiscal emergency in March.

Traditionally, U.S. voters have backed generous pay and benefits for the cops and firefighters willing to risk their lives to keep citizens safe. That was especially so after the deaths of many emergency workers in the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center in New York.

But as economic conditions have worsened and many local governments have run into severe fiscal problems, that attitude has started to change. Since the 2007 recession, some cities have tried to roll back pension benefits and pay, among the most rigid and, in some cases, highest expenses in municipal budgets.

From New York to California and points in between, cops and firefighters have been drawn into pitched battles over their pay and benefits.

In San Diego and San Jose, California's second and third biggest cities, voters in June overwhelmingly backed sweeping pension reforms. In San Jose, all employees will have to choose between reduced benefits or higher retirement contributions.

In the mid-sized California cities of Stockton and San Bernardino, officials say public safety costs were among the factors that forced both to declare bankruptcy. In Vallejo, a former U.S. Navy town near San Francisco that emerged from a three-year bankruptcy last year, public safety pay and benefits were consuming three-quarters of the city's general fund.

Detroit, plagued with one of the highest crime rates in the country, nonetheless cut pay and healthcare benefits for city workers, including police, by 10 percent just over a week ago, a move the mayor says will save the cash-strapped city $102 million a year.

A legal challenge by the Detroit Police Officers Association failed, even as union President Joe Duncan publicly complained of what the cuts would mean for Detroit's ability to hire police, noting that the city is "already 50th on the list of pay for the biggest 50 cities in the United States."

St. Louis this month approved an overhaul of the firefighter retirement system that rolls back decades of increases, while Miami officials trying to plug a $60 million budget gap this week declared "financial urgency," which will let them alter employee contracts. Among the city's proposals: limit overtime for firefighters and require higher health care contributions.

According to an analysis by New York-area newspaper Newsday published last month, police and sheriff's department employees in Nassau and Suffolk counties reached nearly two-thirds of each county's payroll.

"That is why a lot of municipalities are choosing bankruptcy, because it's the only way - other than getting a state control board - of getting out of these salary and pension requirements,'' said the former top official of Suffolk County, Steve Levy.

SAVINGS AND SAFETY

Striking the right balance between savings and safety is a touchy business, though.

While it's become almost routine for voters to rail against fat paychecks and generous benefits for teachers, transit workers and other public employees, cops and firefighters have in the past been largely spared such anger.

For example, in Wisconsin, where most public workers were stripped of their collective bargaining rights and made to pay more to fund their pensions, firefighters, cops and other public safety workers were given an exemption.

Still, Jim Carver, president of the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, says politicians have started to target cops and firefighters. The state seized control of Nassau County's finances after the county failed to balance its budget and had its credit rating cut last year.

Carver bristles at the notion that police and firefighters don't deserve what they earn.

"After 9/11, you couldn't find a politician that wasn't rushing to put his arms around a cop or a firefighter," he said. "Ten, 12 years later, we are to blame for everything. Politicians have made us the enemy. We didn't put a gun to anybody's head. These were fairly negotiated contracts."

"EVERYBODY'S COMPLICIT"

To be sure, it took decades of bad decisions and poor management by local authorities to put many communities in fiscal dire straits. In countless cases, cities, counties and states over-promised benefits to retirees but neglected to set aside sufficient reserves to cover their liabilities.

When the economy and stock market were booming, cities often sweetened pension benefits, confident the money would be there in the end. After 9/11, the cops and firefighters' heroic status with the public meant that they were in a particularly strong bargaining position.

But the 2007-2008 recession and the impact of the housing bust on real estate taxes hammered municipal revenues and badly hurt pension funds' investment returns.

The Pew Center on the States said the gap between states' pension promises and liabilities was $757 billion in 2010.

"Everybody's complicit in this,'' said Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center on Suburban Studies at Hofstra University.

Noel DiGerolamo, head of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association in Suffolk County, has harsh words for the public officials, saying they should be bearing the blame for fiscal woes.

"Rather than being responsible leaders of government and saying, ?We have these pension obligations that we're going to have to pay,' and saving towards those obligations, they are being politicians," DiGerolamo said. "And when the bill comes due, blaming employees who have worked towards and earned these pensions for 20 or 25 years."

BROKE IN CALIFORNIA

Of course, scores of municipalities are managing to balance their budgets even as costs rise. Only a few of the 90,000 issuers in the municipal debt market are in true distress.

Even many with escalating pension costs can meet their current obligations. It's keeping up with promises to aging citizens who are living longer that keeps officials up at night.

In some cases, contracts that may once have seemed fair are helping to bankrupt cities and leading to severe cuts in services, including fire station closures and reductions in police forces. Eight municipalities have sought protection from their creditors so far this year, following 13 that filed in 2011, and many others are having to slash their budgets.

San Bernardino, a city of 210,000 some 65 miles east of Los Angeles that has been hit hard by the collapse of the housing market, says public safety spending eats up 73 percent of its general fund budget, with overtime for firefighters especially onerous. Pension costs are expected to reach $25 million this year, double the 2006 level.

The city imposed a temporary 10 percent pay cut, but the firefighters' union successfully challenged it in court and is entitled to back pay. The city council voted last week to suspend debt payments and quit paying into a retiree health fund.

Some 350 miles to the north, Stockton, the biggest U.S. city ever to file for bankruptcy, allows police officers to retire at 50 with pensions based on 3 percent of final pay for each year in service.

When he signed the bankruptcy filing in June, Stockton city manager Bob Deis said a 1996 decision to provide firefighters with free health care in retirement, later expanded to all city employees, was a "Ponzi scheme" that saddled the city with a $417 million liability.

Because their jobs are dangerous and physically taxing, cops and firefighters typically retire after 20 or 30 years on the job, and that's as it should be, said Michael Coleman, a policy adviser for the League of California Cities, an association of municipal officials from the state.

But that's why it's important to keep pensions reasonable.

"I don't think anyone disagrees that these are dangerous jobs. But how much is enough? Unfortunately, I think it's gone too far," Coleman said.

The contrast between benefits in the public and private sectors is stark.

Only 26 percent of U.S. companies offer retiree healthcare benefits, compared with 66 percent that did so in 1988, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Most private sector employees bear the brunt of providing for their retirement by saving money in funds known as 401(k) plans, with companies typically also making contributions. After the 2007 recession, some firms stopped making contributions altogether.

It can all add to tensions as some taxpayers question why their services are being cut or property taxes raised so a city or county can find the money for generous retirement benefits.

In New York, a 2010 investigation by then-attorney general Andrew Cuomo, now governor, found widespread incidence of "pension padding" - public employees working extra overtime in their last year on the job to boost pay and retirement income.

That's especially costly when it comes to well-paid public safety workers. The Manhattan Institute estimates nearly 10 percent of New York State cops and firefighters who retired in 2011 will receive six-figure pensions, from 2 percent in 2001.

NO QUICK FIXES

Quick fixes, however, are unlikely.

Efforts to revamp public pension plans face stiff legal challenges. Each state has its own constitution, courts and case law that affect how it can go about changing retirement systems.

Firefighters in San Bernardino have filed seven legal actions against attempts to scale back pay and benefits since 2007.

In many municipalities, public salaries and pensions are pegged to those offered in comparably sized regional cities. In New York, pensions, once set by the state, cannot be negotiated through collective bargaining.

At the same time, alternative ways to tackle deficits, such as raising taxes, are politically unpopular.

In the small Southern California city of Stanton, voters recently rejected a proposed utility tax hike that would have raised $1.1 million. The city instead cut back on active police and fire staff, which account for 77 percent of its spending.

"Will there be some impact on response time? There could be," said city manager Carol Jacobs. "But this city is not going to go bankrupt."

In some cases, unions have preferred layoffs to reduced retirement benefits. Two troubled cities in New Jersey are cases in point. Camden, one of the state's poorest and most crime-plagued cities, recently cut its police force by about half, and Newark cut its force by a third after unions declined concessions demanded by their city governments.

In New York, former Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, a Long Island Democrat who has clashed with police unions, gave a stark assessment. "We're facing a problem that will be faced by every town in America.

"You can't raise property taxes anymore - people won't go for it. There's no more money. So, do you cut services, which will result in the death of the suburbs, I think, or do you make these salaries and pensions more rational than they've been?"

Rebels hold 100 Syria loyalists in Aleppo-monitor

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Rebels have detained at least 100 Syrian officers, soldiers and pro-government militiamen this week in the city of Aleppo, where a major battle is anticipated, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday.

A video posted on YouTube showed rebels with Kalashnikovs from "The Tawheed (monotheism) Brigade" guarding the detainees who were lined up in four groups omn a school playground. An off-camera voice said they had been detained in Aleppo, Syria's biggest city.

Some of the detainees' faces were covered with bruises and showed signs of swelling around their eyes and when they spoke their voices quavered.

One said he was a colonel, another a major and several identified themselves as shabbiha, a term used by opposition to describe militiamen who are loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and are fighting alongside his troops.

At the end of the video, a rebel voice said: "The Free Army will terminate all the shabbiha, God willing."

A rebel from the group told Reuters that the detainees were safe and have been moved to an unidentified site in the countryside around Aleppo, which is a rebel stronghold.

"Some were detained in the Shaar police station and others have surrendered," he said.

"They are still alive, they will stay with us until the regime is toppled and then they will be put before a trial, each one will get what he deserves."

Assad has been struggling to crush a 16-month-long uprising against his rule which started as peaceful demonstrations but have become a militarized revolt. At least 17,000 people have been killed in the unrest across the country.

Iran military arm named for attack on Israeli diplomat

NEW DELHI: Alleging that an Iranian state agency was involved in the February 13 bomb attack on an Israeli diplomat in the capital, the Delhi Police has concluded that the suspects were members of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of the nation's military.

The investigation report, exclusively accessed by TOI, states that the IRGC members had discussed the plan to attack the Israeli diplomats in India and other countries with Indian journalist Syed Mohammad Ahmad Kazmi in January 2011, after Iranian scientists had been attacked allegedly by the Israelis. The cops have also learnt that Kazmi was in touch with these people for almost 10 years.

Details about the suspects have been shared with Iran through a letter rogatory. Delhi Police has sought more details of the five IRGC members, including the main bomber, Houshang Afshar Irani, who mentions his profession in Iran as a builder, Sedaghatzadeh Masoud (sales employee in a commercial company on Baharestan St, Tehran), Syed Ali Mahdiansadr (a mobile shopkeeper in Tehran), Mohammad Reza Abolghasemi (clerk in the finance department of Tehran's water authority) and Ali Akbar Norouzishayan (a retired accountant in Tehran).

According to the sources, Masoud is said to be the operational head and it was he who planned the attacks in Georgia, Bangkok and Delhi.

Apart from these five, police have also come across the role of an Iranian woman, identified as Leila Rohani, in the February 13 attack in New Delhi as well as the attacks in Bangkok and Georgia, and has sought details about her as well from Iran. Rohani had allegedly helped Iranian suspects in Bangkok attack of February 14 in getting a flat, after which she fled to Tehran.

Speck HandyShell (for iPad 2 and New iPad)

Despite its thin and light design, using the Apple iPad isn't always the most ergonomically sound affair. There are a number of stands and cases designed to address this issue, but the Speck HandyShell ($54.95 direct) is something of a combination of the two. Like most cases, it will add protection to your tablet, but the real killer feature here is the collapsible handle on the back, which acts as a versatile stand, handgrip, and hanging hook.?There are two separate products listed on Speck's site, one for the iPad 2 and one for the New iPad, but I tested the New iPad version and found the fit was perfect for both.?

The case itself is fairly standard, with a hard matte plastic back with a softer rubber outer ridge that allows the iPad to slip easily in and out of the case. There are cutouts for the headphone jack, camera, lock switch, speaker, and 30-pin port. There are built-in rubber buttons for Power and Volume, and all the ports are easily accessible. The outer edge wraps around the bezel, adding protection from light bumps for the iPad's screen. The HandyShell weighs 0.46 pounds and makes the iPad about an inch thick at its thickest point, so it's going to add some heft to the otherwise svelte tablet. Also, keep in mind that the HandyShell is not Smart Cover compatible. There are three color combos to choose from; black and grey, black and yellow, or pebble and lilac (gray and purple).?

Inline

That thickness accommodates the aforementioned handle, and given the usefulness of that addition, I'd say it's a worthwhile tradeoff. The rounded handle is about 5.5 inches long and 3 inches wide, with a rubberized finish that improves grip. There is a single hinge at the bottom that has a nice weight to it, allowing it to hold any angle under the weight of the iPad itself. The handle functions as a vertical and horizontal stand to prop your tablet up. It also serves as a hook for hanging the tablet up, which is useful for keeping the tablet in sight but off of potentially dirty surfaces?like while cooking. The handle also alleviates hand strain and fatigue from one-handed use, providing a secure grip and more even weight distribution. ??

All told, the Speck HandyShell is one of the simplest and most genuinely useful iPad cases I've tested. The closest competitor to come through our labs, in terms of function, is the Octa Vacuum Dock + WhaleTail ($49.95, 3.5 stars), which adds a comfortable handgrip and adjustable stand, but does not provide any protection and is a bit more awkward to take on the go. The HandyShell will add some bulk and it's a bit expensive at $55, but given the solid level of protection and extremely versatile handle, this is definitely one case worth checking out.?

Turning Your Lawn Into The Envy Of The Neighborhood ? Special ...

If you live in a part of the country that is at risk for wildfires, choose landscaping projects accordingly. For example, trees should be planted at least 100 feet apart. Additionally, large trees should not be planted less than 100 feet from your house or other building structure (garden, shed, workshop, etc.).

A great way to spruce up your landscaping, is to add some attractive outdoor lighting. Small solar lamps up the driveway, or in planting areas can provide a lovely accent to your yard, or special plants and trees. They can be purchased inexpensively at your local home improvement store, and installed quite easily.

When you are going to be digging in your lawn, be it for plants or to make a garden, be careful that you know what you are digging into. For instance, you could accidentally dig into a power line or some pipes. This could have serious consequences and cost you tons of money.

Add new mulch to your garden regularly. Mulch helps to keep your plant?s moist, and it can repel insects as well. In addition, it is pretty to look at a freshly mulched garden. You will also slow down the growth of weeds by keeping your garden mulched on a regular basis

Invest in fresh mulch each spring. It is going to look cleaner, and will add a good bit of curb appeal to your home. Keeping fresh mulch around your flower beds will slow the weed growth. If you live in an area where termites are a problem, consider using pine needles, bark, or pea gravel instead.

In your landscape design, incorporate hard borders at the edges of the lawn where possible. Grass can be difficult to maintain along walls and fences, and will often look unsightly. By incorporating ad hard border, narrow is fine, you will minimize this effect and also give your lawn equipment and solid, ground-level surface to roll on.

One tip that all do it yourself landscapers should always remember is to have fun. Landscaping doesn?t have to be a chore, and it really shouldn?t be. Don?t make your design so complex that it will cause you to loath working on your yard. This can keep you from ever finishing your project.

When planning a landscaping project for your house, consider breaking your entire project down into much smaller jobs. This is important if you are not able to afford the entire project at one time. Doing so will let you tackle your project bit by bit, and not have your yard look like a mess in the meantime.

Utilize different forms and textures in your landscaping plan. This is a great way to diversify your landscaping by using distinctive branching patterns and foliage. From trees to bushes, or perennials to annuals, using a variety of different forms and textures in the plants you choose will add interest and uniqueness to your landscaping design.

Use a row of hedges to help dampen loud noises. If you live on a busy street or near an interstate, you know how annoying the constant sound of traffic can be. Use landscaping to help alleviate this irritant. Plant some bushes between your home and the offending road to help mute the sounds of the passing traffic.

Having a well-groomed front yard will make the curb appeal of your house gain some serious points in the neighborhood. A well-groomed back yard will give you the outdoor space that you desire for family functions, entertaining or just relaxing on your own. This article has shown you ways to accomplish all of this.

For the very best tree services springfield mo you?ll want to take your time and choose the right company for you.

Men with prostate cancer more likely to die from other causes ...

Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are less likely to die from the disease than from largely preventable conditions such as heart disease, according to a new study from Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). It is the largest study to date that looks at causes of death among men with prostate cancer, and suggests that encouraging healthy lifestyle changes should play an important role in prostate cancer management.

"Our results are relevant for several million men living with prostate cancer in the United States," said first author Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at HSPH. "We hope this study will encourage physicians to use a prostate cancer diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage a healthier lifestyle, which could improve the overall health of men with prostate cancer, increasing both the duration and quality of their life."

The study was published July 25, 2012 in the Advance Access online Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer, affecting one in six men during their lifetime. While incidence of prostate cancer has greatly increased in the United States, Sweden, and other Western countries in recent decades, the likelihood that a newly diagnosed man in these countries will die from the disease has declined. The researchers attribute this to the widespread use of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which has resulted in a higher proportion of men diagnosed with lower-risk forms of the disease.

The researchers examined causes of death among prostate cancer cases recorded in the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (over 490,000 men from 1973 to 2008) and the nationwide Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries (over 210,000 men from 1961 to 2008).

The results showed that during the study period, prostate cancer accounted for 52% of all reported deaths in Sweden and 30% of reported deaths in the United States among men with prostate cancer; however, only 35% of Swedish men and 16% of U.S. men diagnosed with prostate cancer died from this disease. In both populations, the risk of prostate cancer-specific death declined, while the risk of death from heart disease and non-prostate cancer remained constant. The five-year cumulative incidence of death from prostate cancer was 29% in Sweden and 11% in the United States.

Death rates from prostate cancer varied by age and calendar year of diagnosis, with the highest number of deaths from the disease among men diagnosed at older ages and those diagnosed in the earlier years of the surveys (especially in the years before the introduction of PSA screening).

"Our study shows that lifestyle changes such as losing weight, increasing physical activity, and quitting smoking, may indeed have a greater impact on patients' survival than the treatment they receive for their prostate cancer," said senior author Hans-Olov Adami, professor of epidemiology at HSPH.

Dog Day Afternoon: A Tribute to Frank Pierson | moderndaystoryteller

?What I find helpful, when constructing a character, is to think through a bit of what the character?s background is, and in that way let the character begin to tell me, as the writer, what he or she wants to do.?

-? Frank Pierson, on writing the screenplay for Dog Day Afternoon (from Oscar-Winning Screenwriters on Screenwriting by Joel Engel)

?

There are a few reasons Dog Day Afternoon ? one of my Top 50 Films and Top 50 Screenplays of all time ? holds up as well today as it did when first released in 1975.

The performances developed by an ensemble of New York actors ? Al Pacino, Chris Sarandon, John Cazale, Carol Kane, Charles Durning ? were authentic and true to character. The director, Sidney Lumet, was smart and respectful enough to allowed the script and the performances to speak for themselves, and to allow the actors substantial rehearsal time.

And screenwriter Frank Pierson decided from the onset, that he would not build the screenplay around the failed bank robbery on which the film was based, but rather around ?the character who tried to pull it off and the other people in his world.?

Pierson said he intended for the viewer to continue to learn more about the main character, Sonny Wortzik (Al Pacino), and those around him as the story unfolded ? ?like peeling back onion layers?.

Thus, the focus of the screenplay shifted from plot to the nature of Sonny, his relationship with his ?wife? Leon Shermer (Chris Sarandon), as well as Sonny?s relationship with the hostages in the bank ? how they gradually lose their fear of him and start to identify with him during his escalating battle with the police. Though in the end, when Sonny and his accomplice, Sal (John Cazale) arrive at the airport and the police make their move, everyone deserts him and Sonny finds himself completely alone.

With the journey of the main character and the concept of ?peeling the layers? of his characters in mind, Pierson sought to knuckle out the chronology of events ? some real, some imagined, which did not necessarily pertain to the reality of the true story.

It is possible that had Pierson remained true to ?real life events? and had centered the characters around them ? as oppose to vise versa, that I might not be writing this tribute today. Nevertheless, the writer gives much of the script?s credit to director, Sidney Lumet, stating that the script benefited tremendously from having Lumet at the helm, ?because Sidney likes to have a lot of rehearsal before shooting, almost as though staging a play.?

Pierson described Lumet as one of the rare movie directors who knew ?how to really userehearsal time?. Not merely to work out staging, but as an opportunity for improvisation, to explore character.

According to Pierson, the collaboration with Lumet went as follows: Lumet had the actors improvise off the script all the way through rehearsals, Pierson went off to another job, returned after a week or so to see what insights they had stumbled upon, and added orsubtracted the necessary material.

It carried on more or less like so until one day when in Hollywood, Pierson received a call from a panic-stricken Lumet: ?Get on a plane and come to New York!?

Pierson arrived on set, mentally-prepared for major dialogue or scene changes. But that not the case. Things were a lot worse. Al Pacino was ready to quit.

He couldn?t bring himself to play Sonny the way Pierson had written him.

The project had started off with the studio?s ? Warner Brother?s ? working title of ?Boys in the Bank?, based on the Life Magazine article, The Boys in the Bank, about the robbery of the Chase Manhattan Bank that took place in Brooklyn on August 22, 1972.

John Wojtowicz (who in the article is described to have ?the broken-faced good looks of an Al Pacino or a Dustin Hoffman?), along with accomplices, Salvatore Naturile and Robert Westenberg, had attempted to rob the bank and had held seven employees hostage for 14 hours.

Wojtowicz had had a failed first marriage to Carmen Bifulco, a typist at Chase Manhattan Bank. His second was less conventional. Wojtowicz had been married to Ernest Aron. However, their marriage ended 4 months later when Aron left him in pursuit of a sex-change operation.

John Wojtowicz/Al Pacino

According to the article by P.F. Kluge and Thomas Moore, ?These must have been the worst weeks in John Wojtowicz?s life. The quiet normality of his first marriage was far behind him. The precarious second life he?d built around his liaison with Ernest Aron was a shambles. Deserted, low on cash, convinced that certain ?lumps? in his intestines were growing into a terminal cancer, Wo- jtowicz groped for one master stroke which would provide for his wife and kids, regain the esteem of Ernest Aron, and enable him to spend whatever time he had left living, as he had always wanted to live, ?high on the hog.?

Back to Al Pacino who was ready to quit the movie.

Pierson confesses that original drafts of Dog Day Afternoon focussed more on the hilarious nature of Leon, Chris Sarandon?s character and Al Pacino?s character?s ?wife? in the movie. Leon in real life was, according to Pierson, ?one of those drag queens who can?t offer you a glass of water without putting such an obscene sexual spin on it that it makes you fall down laughing.?

It was this humor and overt sexuality that Pierson had sprinkled into his script. It was this humor that Pacino was particular uncomfortable with. Also, there was a scene inside the bank where Sonny kisses Leon and the two share a few sexual jokes about their relationship.

Pacino?s terms were clear and non-negotiable.

?The kiss is out, and there can?t be any jokes about their relationship. And furthermore, I won?t appear in the same frame with Leon.?

In other words, Pierson had to completely re-think his story and not to mention, his script. And as far as Sonny and Leon went, the only time they could share a scene was over the telephone.

It was about at this time when Pierson and Lumet decided it was time to send the script to Pacino?s adversary, Dustin Hoffman. At which point, Pacino took Pierson aside and asked him, ?How often in the course of a serious relationship? where the two people who?ve discovered they can?t go on together anymore and are going to have to say good-bye forever ? how often does sex come into it?? Pierson?s reply: ?Never?.

Pacino continued. Why couldn?t they leave the sex jokes out and treat it ?as a story about two people who love each other and can?t find a way to live with each other??

To which Pierson responded, ?Damn! Why in the hell didn?t you say that three months ago???

Once Pierson realized that Pacino was right, he set out to dismantle the screenplay, ?take everything out and stitch it back together again.? What seemed initially like a mammoth rewrite, took a mere 4 hours.

The hardest part came however, when it was time for Pierson to illustrate Sonny and Leon?s relationship through two phone calls.

This is how he did it.

First, Pierson, wrote two long monologues ? one for Sonny, one for Leon. Then he took the monologues to rehearsal where Lumet dismissed everyone but Pacino and Sarandon. As the two actors began improvising off their monologues, Pierson started to tape them. Nearly an hour later, the rehearsal was over and Pierson and Lumet got 12 people to transcribe it. And from the transcribe, Pierson pieced together a conversation between two ill-fated lovers which was then halved to form two telephone conversations.

Pierson describes this moment as the point in screenwriting where everyone is more or less satisfied, until you discover something else that was there all along, which makes you sit up and say, ?Wait a second, there?s more here?.

Pierson stated that the original script would have been funnier, much more camp, ?like Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?, and probably a commercial success. Though he also admits, ?It would not have had the timelessness that it does now, because it would?ve been more shallow and it would probably be considered homophobic.?

Dog Day Afternoon received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its first release. Film critic, Christopher Null, has said that the film ?captures perfectly the zeitgeist of the early 1970s, a time when optimism was scraping rock bottom.?

Frank Pierson would go on to receive an Oscar for his screenplay. But was always quick to acknowledge the role that his director and lead actor played in the development of the script.

?I?m grateful to both Sidney and Al,? he said.?We had that time to rehearse, which gave Sidney and Al and everybody time to come to grips with what they saw taking form.?

?And because of that, we had the opportunity to fix a weakness in the script ? a weakness that would have shown when it was projected forty feet high.?

?Frank Pierson, received an Academy Award nomination for his first screenplay, the western lampoon ?Cat Ballou,? another Oscar nod for his script of ?Cool Hand Luke? and the Oscar for? ?Dog Day Afternoon.? Most recently he worked as consulting producer and writer for TV series ?Mad Men? and ?The Good Wife.?? His career as Screenwriter spanned 5 decades. He also served as president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Frank Pierson died July?22 at a hospital in Los Angeles. He was 87.

Why Aren't There Any Openly Gay Astronauts?

The lack of even one openly gay or lesbian living astronaut in the history of American spaceflight may reflect the culture at the NASA astronaut office

Three hundred and thirty American men and women have served as astronauts since the start of NASA's human spaceflight program. Only one is publicly known to have been gay or bisexual ? Sally Ride ? and she kept it private until her death, yesterday (July 23), when her obituary on the Sally Ride Science organization's website stated that Ride was survived by Tam O'Shaughnessy, her "partner of 27 years."

As the first American woman in space and a scientist, Ride served as a role model for generations of young girls. Now, she'll serve as a role model for LGBT youth as well, said her sister, Bear Ride. "I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them," Bear Ride, who identifies as gay, told?Buzzfeed?yesterday.

Gay rights advocates say Sally Ride's addition to the ranks of LGBT role models will make a tremendous impact. "Role models are incredibly valuable for everyone, but I think especially for LGBT youth, who may be born into a family where they don't have an LGBT role model. It is so important for them to look out into the world and see they could be welcome in that world," Stuart Gaffney, media director at Marriage Equality USA, told SPACE.com. "Sally Ride will be that for them now."

Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin concurred, telling Buzzfeed, "The fact that Sally Ride was a lesbian will further help round out Americans' understanding of the contributions of LGBT Americans to our country." [Astronaut Sally Ride: In Her Own Words]

Ride's decision to keep her sexual orientation private reflects her very private nature, sources said. But the lack of even one openly gay or lesbian astronaut in the history of American spaceflight may reflect the culture at the NASA astronaut office. Although NASA does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, Michael Cassutt, author of five books and hundreds of articles about human spaceflight, said coming out would until recently have been "a career-wrecker" for an astronaut. "Not for any formal reason, but in the same way that any medical issue or even some kind of notoriety has been an astronaut career-wrecker," Cassutt told SPACE.com.

"Any issue that detracts from the mission is or has been the kind of thing an astronaut wants to avoid. It isn't NASA politics; it is NASA politics as practiced at the astronaut office," Cassutt said, adding that the office has often resembled a "military squadron."

A NASA spokesman told SPACE.com that astronauts decide for themselves what to reveal about their private lives.

"Certainly we try to be open with their professional activities and beyond that what they reveal privately is pretty much up to them," said the spokesman, who asked not to be named. Still, the fact remains that no astronauts have ever come out as?gay?or?lesbian, while many astronauts include mention of their husbands, wives or children on their NASA official biography pages. (As of today, Ride's NASA bio page was updated to mention that she is survived by her mother, with no mention of her partner.)

Cassutt said even though he suspects there are or have been some other gay or lesbian astronauts, and in spite of the progress made on LGBT issues, "I don't expect anyone in the current corps to be 'out' any time soon, assuming anyone is gay."

The implication is that even in 2012, a same-sex orientation could still earn an astronaut unwanted notoriety that would detract from a mission. Robert Pearlman, space historian and founding editor of collectSPACE.com?(a SPACE.com partner site), said the choice to shield one's sexuality "unfortunately cannot yet be labeled 'behind the times.' While there are a great many more people who are openly gay today, we are not yet to a point of universal acceptance," he noted.

Nikkei sheds 1.4 pct to 7-wk closing low on US earnings

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Nikkei share average fell 1.4 percent on Wednesday to a seven-week closing low after disappointing results from Apple Inc results hit the iPhone maker's Japanese suppliers, while printer makers fell after Lexmark International cut its outlook.

Worries about slowing global growth and the deepening euro zone sovereign debt crisis have bitten into U.S. and Japanese corporate earnings. Of 26 U.S. firms that have revised third-quarter profit forecasts since mid-June, 19 have cut them, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The Nikkei dropped 122.19 points to 8,365.90, edging closer to its June 4 low of 8,238.96. The benchmark has fallen 7 percent so far this month, and is down 1 percent this year.

A senior trader said investors were picking up Nikkei put options at 8,000 with August expiry to hedge against further declines.

"There's really nothing to support the market at the moment and it looks like it will sink right through June's lows without any trouble," said Hiroyuki Mutsuro, head of execution support at Mizuho Securities.

"Demand has really cooled in Europe and even firms that have done well on domestic consumption are going to find it hard to maintain their share prices."

Toshiba Corp slumped 7.3 percent to a 40-month low after Apple posted worse-than-expected quarterly results and the Japanese company said on Tuesday that it would cut memory chip production by 30 percent.

Panasonic Corp, another Apple supplier, sagged 5.5 percent to a 32-year low.

Other Apple contractors to suffer included Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd, Foster Electric Co Ltd, Ibiden Co Ltd, Seiko Epson Corp and Taiyo Yuden Co Ltd, down between 4.2 and 7.5 percent.

The broader Topix shed 1.6 percent to 706.46. Trading volume hit a two-week high, with 1.78 billion shares changing hands, up from 1.64 billion on Tuesday and 1.41 billion on Monday.

"The sellers that we seeing were primary long-only," another senior dealer at a foreign bank said, adding that domestic investors bought at around these levels when the Japanese markets bounced on June 4.

"The things that are different this time, though ... the currency is a lot stronger than it was last time, Europe is in a lot worse shape than it was last time and the BOJ, when they are stepping into the market, are buying a much smaller size," he said.

"I would say those things conspire to open the path lower."

With the recent sell-off, the Topix's 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio slipped to 0.84 to a month low, data from Thomson Reuters Datastream showed.

Japanese firms' one-month earnings momentum -- analysts' earnings upgrades minus downgrades as a total of estimates -- worsened to -4.8 percent from a fall of 2.3 percent last month, Datastream data showed.

That still fared better than the outlook for S&P 500 companies as their earnings momentum deteriorated to -18.4 percent from a fall of 8.4 percent in June.

CANON, RICOH FALL

Japanese printer makers came under pressure after U.S. peer Lexmark reported weaker-than-expected quarterly results on a drop in demand in Europe and a strong dollar, and the company cut its full-year forecast.

Ricoh Co Ltd dropped 5.5 percent, while Konica Minolta Holdings Inc lost 4.3 percent and Canon Inc fell 0.9 percent.

After the bell, Canon cut its full-year operating profit outlook to 390 billion yen from a previously forecast 450 billion yen, buffeted by a euro zone crisis which sent the yen climbing while sapping demand for a key export market.

However, Japan Tobacco Inc advanced 1 percent as investors sought refuge in defensive shares and after Morgan Stanley MUFG lifted the price target of the Japanese company.

Softbank Corp climbed 4 percent, and was the heaviest traded stock on the main board, after Bank of America Merrill Lynch upgraded its rating on the mobile operator to "buy" from "neutral", saying it was the fastest growing among wireless firms and its capex would decline the most in the next two years.
