(AP Photo/Carrie Antlfinger)

(AP) ? Lucky, a 7-year-old dairy cow, had been walking with a limp for several weeks when veterinarian Sara Gilbertson was called. Instead of prescribing painkillers, Gilbertson tried an unusual new therapy ? a chiropractic adjustment that included a full-length spinal massage.

Gilbertson rubbed the Holstein's spine by gently squeezing it from neck to tail, pausing to apply firm pressure to one hip and readjust several vertebrae. The cow stood in calm silence, moving only enough to reach another mouthful of hay. Later, as Lucky reclined on a bed of sand, Gilbertson noted with satisfaction how relaxed and comfortable the animal seemed.

Cow comfort has become a key concern for the nation's farmers, who have known for generations that contented cows give more milk. The traditional techniques for keeping cows happy aren't complicated ? feed them well, keep the temperature comfortable and give them room to move around. But some dairy farmers are turning to a new array of creative options intended to keep cows as mellow ? and productive ? as possible.

Some farmers have installed waterbeds for their cows to rest on, while others play classical music. And some hire animal chiropractors to give older cows a tuneup and correct minor issues in calves, all part of the effort to ensure maximum milk output.

Do the methods really work? There's no sound scientific data to back up the claims, but dairy farmers say they can see the difference with their own eyes ? cows are giving more milk, the milk quality is improving and the herds seem to be enjoying the indulgences.

"It's kind of like how an athlete with a sprained ankle isn't as productive," said Larry Meyer, 36, whose parents own the dairy farm in Chilton, Wis., where Lucky and another 115 dairy cows live. "If you can get a cow healthy and back to normal, it makes a difference in their productivity."

Cows can suffer injuries if they slip on a slick spot of concrete or get stepped on by another 1,500-pound bovine, and some calves get their necks kinked during the birthing process. The injuries can cause pain when the animals stand, making them reluctant to jostle for food and leading to compensatory injuries. That, in turn, leads to less milk production.

That's why farmers are willing to spend about $75 per session for a chiropractic adjustment.

"The cows tolerate it incredibly well," said Gilbertson, the veterinarian. "They may be apprehensive at first, until they figure out how good it feels."

Meyer didn't have specific figures on how much milk Lucky gave following her chiropractic treatments, but because her mother was the most productive cow in the herd, he wanted to make sure Lucky was in good shape.

While chiropractic care is reserved for injured cows, dairy farmers also are investing in healthy cows' happiness.

Richard Conrad installed $70,000 waterbeds on his farm in Grafton, Ohio, about a year ago. It took the 220 dairy cows a few months to adjust to the softer surface but now they seem to enjoy it, he said.

"They were real skeptical at first because it was real jiggly," said Conrad, 53, "but once they adapted they didn't look back. They just jump on and stay there."

The result has been milk with fewer impurities and in greater volume ? cows that used to give about 80 pounds of milk per day now average about 90 pounds, Conrad said. However, he couldn't credit the waterbeds with all the improvement; he also upgraded ventilation in his barns and installed misting technology to keep the herd cool.

Dairy farmers commonly adjust air, temperature and lighting to keep cows happy. Some have also installed large rotating brushes that gently scratch the cows' backs and massage their faces and shoulders, said Marcia Endres, a University of Minnesota Extension dairy scientist.

And some dairy producers have employed even more unusual techniques, even in absence of scientific data that justifies their use. In Germany, for example, the Dortmund Concert Hall plays recordings of different classical pieces for specific cows. The hall then serves milk from the respective cows during live concerts featuring those same pieces.

"Which means you'll now be able to both listen to and taste the musical highlights," the hall says in one advertisement.

Dairy experts agree the concept is entertaining, if a bit of a logical stretch. They also agree that dairy farmers need to be careful about introducing new techniques ? music, waterbeds, chiropractic care ? into a herd that's already relatively comfortable.

"Cows are creatures of habit. They like things to stay the same," Endres said. "So many producers like to not introduce too much change. Cows just don't like a lot of weird things happening to them."

Filed Under Cameras Olympus creates world's thinnest industrial videoscope, packs HDR (video)

Though its medical brethren are considerably slimmer, at 2.4mm in diameter, Olympus says its iPLEX TX is the most slender industrial videoscope on our big blue marble. Rather than using traditional fiber optics to capture footage reminiscent of comic book print, the iPLEX TX houses a miniature CMOS atop one end of the scope and an HDR image processing technology called WiDER to preserve detail and brighten images. The eagle-eyed scope is also 200 times more resistant to frictional wear than fiberscopes and has over double the slip strength. If you're itching to poke inside impossibly cramped and complex pieces of machinery, jump past the break to catch a glimpse of the video-enabled snake in action from DigInfo.tv.

Home Values Continue to Climb in April - Atlanta condominiums

Click to view news release full screen

My news for Investors

SEATTLE, May 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ? National home values rose for the second month in a row, climbing 0.7 percent from March to a Zillow Home Value Index[i] of $147,300. This is the largest monthly increase in home values since January 2006, when they rose 0.8 percent, according to the April Zillow? Real Estate Market Reports[ii].

Rents also rose from March to April, increasing 1.6 percent, according to the Zillow Rent Index[iii]. Rents rose in 78 percent of the 178 markets covered by Zillow.

Home values rose significantly in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix metro areas, rising 1.6 and 1.9 percent, respectively. However, values continued to fall in hard-hit markets such as Atlanta, where home values declined 0.7 percent.

?The housing market continues to show positive signs, with home values increasing significantly in April,? said Zillow Chief Economist Dr. Stan Humphries. ?The recovery is moving in the right direction, but we caution that negative equity will cast a long shadow over the housing market. With almost one-third of homeowners with mortgages underwater and unable to sell their homes, inventory is having a hard time keeping up with increasing demand in many areas. We?ll continue to watch this signal as increasing home values turn from a blip into a trend.?

Foreclosures continued to decline in April, with 6.8 out of every 10,000 homes in the country being foreclosed. That was down from 8 out of every 10,000 in March.

The full national report, in its interactive format, will be available at www.zillow.com/local-info at 8 a.m. ET on Friday, May 25. Whose Islands are they? South Korea tries branding in its dispute with Japan

Japan and Korea have long sparred over the Takeshima/Dokdo islets. The latest bid to promote Korea's claim: Napa Valley wine labels.

Though the Japanese refer to island group as Takeshima and remain in a bitter dispute over the issue, ?Koreans are adamant that Dokdo is Korean sovereign territory ? and they are very committed to letting the rest of the world know.

The latest ploy: a Napa Valley wine produced by Korean-American dentist Ahn Jae-hyun at his Dokdo Winery that uses the island post code as its moniker.

Illustrating the fervor with which such attempts to garner attention for Korea?s sovereign claims over the outcrop, when the wine debuted on the Korean market the local distributor pledged to donate all proceeds to nonprofit groups promoting Korean sovereign claims in other countries. ?

While both Korea and Japan point to historical documents to back up their respective claims, South Korea has occupied Dokdo/Takeshima for more than half a century. And it remains a key rallying symbol for lingering resentment over Japan's colonial occupation of the then unified Korean Peninsula in the first half of the 20th century.

Previous efforts to highlight Korea?s territorial claims to Dokdo/Takeshima range from what some observers view as the practical to the more extreme.

In 2010, the Korean singer Kim Jang-hoon was behind a months-long video advertisement in New York's Times Square that not only specifically proclaimed Dokdo as Korean territory but also made sure to refer to the sea in which they are located the East Sea, as opposed to the Sea of Japan.

In recent years, a series of ads taken out in major American newspapers announced a near identical message. The latest, placed as a full-page ad in The New York Times in March by Dokdo campaigner Seo Kyoung-duk and South Korean e-commerce firm Gmarket displayed the national flags of four countries ? including the South Korean Taegukgi ? alongside the names of four islands related to each.

In the case of the other three countries, a line connects each island with the relevant national flag ? except that of South Korea and Dokdo. Readers were encouraged to connect the two, the implication being that Dokdo is Korean territory. Japan protested the ad.?

In 2008, the president of the Korean Dry Cleaners Association in the US produced plastic bags emblazoned with a picture and a map of the disputed island along with the English slogans ?Dokdo Island is Korean territory? and ?The Japanese government must acknowledge this fact,? which were taken up by about 100 Korean dry cleaners in New York.?

And the Korea Times, a leading South Korean English-language newspaper, has for several years run an international Dokdo-themed essay competition in conjunction with the Seoul-based Northeast Asian History Foundation that invariably challenges entrants to tip their hat toward Korea?s claims to the outcrop. The winner receives a $1,270 cash prize.

Still, despite the stated intentions of Dokdo wine producer Ahn and others like him, his website gently hints at what could be seen as the futility of the territorial dispute.

Without any apparent irony, it states: ?For as long as we can remember, there has been much controversy over the island and the ownership of it. Instead of appreciating the beauty of Dokdo, the world has been too busy fighting over it.?

RPT-INSIGHT-Minute by minute, Nasdaq chaos engulfed Facebook IPO

Sat May 26, 2012 11:59am BST

(Repeats with no changes to text or headline)

By Rodrigo Campos and John McCrank

May 25 (Reuters) - Dead silence.

For nearly 20 minutes on the morning of Facebook Inc's trading debut last Friday, the line Nasdaq had opened up to keep traders informed about the social media company's $16 billion IPO had been mute. Well after the stock was supposed to have opened at 11 a.m. New York time, no one from Nasdaq was talking - and there was still no sign of trading.

Finally, at 11:28 a.m., an unidentified person announced that the shares would open in about 2 minutes. Nasdaq also said orders and cancellations were still being processed, according to several sources listening to the call.

Those crucial 20 minutes created confusion that turned into chaos over the next few hours as market makers - the brokers who quote bid and offer prices - struggled to figure out what was happening. They were rebuffed in their attempts to get Nasdaq to halt trading and sort out a growing number of problems.

A lack of communication and, some say, misinformation from Nasdaq may have been central to the failed debut of Facebook's shares. Market makers - crucial to the smooth operation of stock trading - were unsure about their exposure for hours. Investors were in the dark as to whether their trades had gone through, in some cases for days afterwards.

The turmoil caused the four big market-makers for Facebook's stock, Knight Capital Group, Citigroup's Automated Trading Desk, Citadel Securities, and UBS AG to lose around $115 million between them.

"There was very little if any communication from Nasdaq throughout the entire process," said Mark Turner, head of trading at Instinet, another market-maker based in New York. "As a matter of fact, we feel there was miscommunication."

Instinet said it also suffered a loss, though it wasn't specific other than to say it was significantly less than the $30-35 million reported by Knight.

The precise actions taken by Nasdaq officials last Friday are still unclear. Spokespeople for Nasdaq declined numerous requests for comment, referring Reuters to a status alert issued on Monday that outlined some of the problems encountered and some of the steps it took in an attempt to resolve them.

FIST-PUMPING

The Nasdaq call, led by Nasdaq Vice President Todd Golub, according to sources, was scheduled to last 2 hours from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. to make sure that the exchange was keeping in close touch with the market. It is a normal event for a big IPO.

However, this call stretched into the late afternoon, as the most anticipated new U.S. stock offering in years turned into one of the ugliest.

The fallout from the events last Friday has become a continuing nightmare for Nasdaq OMX Group, which wooed the social media network for months and openly prides itself on its technology.

The result is another black eye for an exchange industry already suffering because investors not only lost confidence in the financial crisis but through the "flash crash" in May 2010 when $1 trillion in shareholder equity was temporarily wiped out in a matter of minutes.

Nasdaq CEO Bob Greifeld pumped his fist at the symbolic opening bell ceremony at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California next to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg an hour-and-a-half before the company's stock was due to start trading. There were no outward signs then of the problems that were about to unfold back on Wall Street.

At 10:58 a.m., Nasdaq issued a notice that the Facebook opening would be delayed until 11:05 a.m. IPO delays of that nature are not unusual, especially with a massive launch like Facebook.

But then the revised start time passed without an opening trade on the stock. Minutes passed as traders waited. Nasdaq's next communication came at 11:13 a.m., when it noted in a terse emailed message to people who subscribe to the exchange's alerts that Nasdaq is "experiencing a delay in delivering the opening print in Facebook," with no other details.

Meanwhile, market-makers were receiving messages about their orders that later proved to be inaccurate. They say they were told during the period between 11:05 and 11:30 a.m., when the stock finally opened, that orders were still being taken for the opening price.

"Nasdaq representatives were stating right up until 11:29 that they were still accepting orders in Facebook for the open," said Turner of Instinet.

But that wasn't the case. Later, Turner said he was told that orders submitted up to 25 minutes before the opening were either canceled or not submitted into the marketplace until about 1:50 p.m. - more than two hours later. Other market makers received similar messages.

Behind the scenes, the massive order volume was overwhelming Nasdaq's systems.

Orders that were supposed to be processed in 3 milliseconds were taking 5 milliseconds, said one person familiar with exchange operations. This proved to be a major problem: In the extra two milliseconds new orders flooded in, thwarting the system's ability to establish an opening price for the stock and leading to a backup in unprocessed orders.

"This is starting to get bizarre," Wayne Kaufman, an equity market strategist at brokerage John Thomas Financial, said from the firm's trading floor on Wall Street, around 11:15 a.m.

Finally, the decision was made to put through a fix to the systems problem and get the stock trading. That move to a secondary matching engine used the order book as it appeared at 11:11 a.m. - but this meant new orders and changes in orders that came in later did not show up in the opening price. A matching engine is a computer that pairs bids and offers to complete trades.

Eric Noll, Nasdaq's head of transaction services, said in a statement earlier this week that the fix instead led to 2-1/2 hours of uncertainty during which brokers were unable to see the results of their trades.

TRADING HALT?

The stock opened at 11:30:09 a.m. at $42.05 a share. An investor looking at a quote screen might have thought the trouble had ended there. In reality, the problems were about to worsen.

After initially heading to a high of $45, the stock soon began to plunge towards its issue price at $38. Lead underwriter Morgan Stanley stepped in to defend the stock while some others - unsure whether their orders had been processed or not - backed away from trading or decided to sell.

If confidence is undermined at the open, people "pull back because their orders are essentially going into a black hole," said former Nasdaq Vice Chairman David Weild.

Clients were telling their brokers they had not received confirmation of orders - which normally come through in seconds.

"Multiple market makers called Nasdaq and asked them to halt the stock and said, 'You have a problem and it's getting worse,' and their response was, 'The stock is trading normally,'" said an executive at one market-maker.

It is unclear who would have the authority to halt the stock. Nasdaq would not comment on whether it considered such a move.

For market-makers, the chaos was particularly problematic because they didn't know what they and their clients owned, and at what price.

"Should I be selling stock, should I be buying? And what's my price point?" said another official at a market-making firm. "You just don't know, so you wer

The biggest difference in the home over the past sixty years is that families don?t do things together any more. For instance, the kids eat at different time from their parents. In the fifties and sixties, the family all ate at a set time.

James:

When I was a child, we lived in a little two-bedroom cottage with an outside toilet. To get to the toilet, you had to go along a passage, down four flights of stairs and across a mud track. And there weren?t enough toilets for all the houses there! I really hated it. Till late into the fifties, we still had a single-tub washing machine with wringers.

Former high-school star Brian Banks does serious time on trumped-up charge, now hopes for an NFL shot

Occasionally, we come across stories that defy credulity to the point where we can?t quite believe what we?re seeing. And when these stories involve good people getting railroaded and losing huge parts of their lives for no good reason ? well, it?s hard to know what to think.

That?s our reaction to Brian Banks? story, and we aren?t even living it. One struggles to imagine what he?s been through. Banks is a former star high-school football recruit who lost any shot at his dream of college football ? and just about anything else ? as a result of a casual ?make-out? session with 15-year-old Wanetta Gibson. The two Polytechnic High students from Long Beach did not have sex, but Gibson accused Banks of rape nonetheless. Despite a lack of DNA evidence, Banks? lawyer ? who won?t be winning any Perry Mason awards any time soon ? advised his client to take a plea against his own innocence.

According to the Sporting News, the attorney was hardly an advocate. ?She told me I was a big black teenager,? Banks said, ?and no jury would believe anything I said.?

Eventually, Banks served five years and two months in prison and spent another five years on probation. When he was released from prison, he had to register as a sex offender and wear an ankle bracelet. Any shot he had of making a go of football was gone ? now, it was just about survival under unimaginable circumstances. How do you live life as the worst sort of person when you?re not? And how do you get past losing that much of your life for something you didn?t do?

The story gets even stranger. Gibson sued the school district for not providing a safe environment, and was awarded $1.5 million. Last year, she had the nerve to contact Banks through Facebook and ask to be ?friends.? Most people would have bombed that friend request with all the appropriate obscene verbiage, but Banks had something else in mind.

?I stopped what I was doing,? he said, ?and got down on my knees and prayed to God to help me play my cards right.? Banks set up a couple of meetings with Gibson, who said that she?d try to help Banks clear his name with one caveat ? she couldn?t talk to prosecutors, you see, because she might lose that $1.5 million award. Banks secretly recorded conversations in which Gibson admitted that the charges were bogus, and took those recordings to the California Innocence Project, a program at California Western School of Law.
Attorneys brought the case back to the judge who convicted and sentenced Banks, and on Thursday, his name was finally cleared.

?There are no words in any language, no gesture in any culture that can explain or describe what I have been through,? he said.

Gibson didn?t attend the hearing ? no doubt she was spending time under a rock somewhere ? and the local D.A. says that she won?t likely be charged for falsely accusing Banks, because the case is 10 years old, and she was only 15 years old at the time. That?s bad enough, but I?d really like to know what the D.A. ? or any other local official ? plans to do about that $1.5 million. it?s tough to reconcile that concept after watching her glibly admit that the charges were false.

As for Banks, he has lost 50 pounds since he started working out in earnest last October, and the former star linebacker is trying to move on and give his football dream one more chance.

?Let me show you what I can produce,? Banks recently told the Today Show. ?I think that any team that gives me an opportunity will be really impressed with what I can do.?

Even if Banks can?t pass that particular test anymore, there?s no question any team would be impressed with who he is.

As for you, Ms. Gibson? You?ve got one hellacious karmic debt to pay.

Spain region, Greek exit warnings rattle euro zone

(Reuters) - Central banks and companies risk making a grave error if they do not brace for a possible Greek exit from the euro zone, Belgium's foreign minister said on Friday, rattling markets already alarmed by Spain's deteriorating finances.

Greek elections are scheduled for June 17 and could hasten the country's departure from the currency club should a government intent on ripping up the country's bailout program result.

Contrasting findings of opinion polls on Friday showed the outcome is too tight to call.

Greece accounts for little more than 2 percent of the euro zone economy but could pose a profound contagion threat if it quit the currency area, throwing the spotlight on Portugal, Spain and even Italy.

"There is no organized discussion at the European level along the lines of: what do we do (if Greece leaves)," Didier Reynders, who is both Belgium's foreign minister and deputy prime minister, told the European American Press Club in Paris. "Now, if central banks and companies are not preparing for the scenario, that would be a grave professional error."

Spain is in plenty of trouble even disregarding any backwash from Greece.

Its wealthiest autonomous region, Catalonia, on Friday said it needed help from the central government because it was running out of options for refinancing debt this year.

"We don't care how they do it, but we need to make payments at the end of (each) month. Your economy can't recover if you can't pay your bills," Catalan President Artur Mas told reporters.

Spain's trump card had been that it had successfully issued well over half the sovereign debt it needs to in 2012.

But after revealing this week that its highly indebted regions faced 36 billion euros of debt refinancing bills this year, way above the previously stated 8 billion, that advantage may have been wiped out.

On top of public debt, the country is hobbled by a banking sector overwhelmed by bad debts tied to a property market boom that went bust and still has some way further to fall.

Bankia SA , Spain's fourth-biggest bank, on Friday asked for a bailout of 19 billion euros ($24 billion) to repair losses from a property crash - the biggest Spanish bank rescue ever.

Spain is nationalizing Bankia, which holds some 10 percent of the country's bank deposits. The government insists the bank is a one-off case, but economists say a wider bailout of the sector, either by Madrid or the euro zone, may become necessary.

Adding to a miserable day for Spanish investors, Standard & Poor's lowered its ratings on the debt of Bankia and four other Spanish banks and said it was taking a dimmer view of Spain's economy.

Markets have been buffeted by the escalating euro zone crisis in recent weeks and face more uncertainty up to the Greek election date, and maybe beyond.

The euro plumbed near two-year lows against the U.S. dollar on the back of the Catalonian warning, stocks slipped, and Italian and Spanish borrowing costs rose.

"The Catalonia news was a big deal because it implies that the Spanish government may have to take on more debt and it cannot afford to do so," said Richard Franulovich, senior currency strategist at Westpac Securities in New York.

CONTINGENCY

EU leaders insisted at a summit on Wednesday that they wanted to keep Greece in the euro zone and they have good reason to, given the losses that could be inflicted on them and the European Central Bank should Greece on its debt.

But sources told Reuters the Eurogroup Working Group - experts who work for the bloc's finance ministers - had told member states to begin making contingency plans for a Greece exit.

"Our first priority is to keep Greece in the euro zone whilst they are respecting the commitments," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy told a news conference during a visit to Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Friday.

"Of course we are reflecting on all different kind of scenarios, but we never discussed them neither in technical nor in political form," he said. "The contingency plan is not our priority."

French banks, which are among the lenders most exposed to Greece, have stepped up their plans for a Greek euro zone exit, sources familiar with the situation said. They include Credit Agricole , BNP Paribas and Societe Generale .

"Every bank has a task force right now looking at the potential consequences of a return to the drachma," a Paris-based banker said.

Most economists agree the austerity measures foisted on Greece as part of its 130 billion-euro bailout will be impossible to deliver because they would drive the country deeper into recession and make debt even harder to cut.

Peter Bofinger, one of the five "wise men" who formally advise the German government on the economy, said Europe should renegotiate the terms of Greece's bailout as they were agreed on overly optimistic assumptions about growth.

"The terms for Greece should be renegotiated," Bofinger told Reuters in an interview. "That's very important for both sides, because if you have an uncontrolled exit of Greece, it could lead to a 'Lehman moment' for Europe."

Joe The Plumber: Joe Biden's Comments Were 'Asinine'

Samuel Wurzelbacher, commonly known as "Joe the Plumber," went after Joe Biden on Thursday, calling the vice president's comments on Mitt Romney's private equity record "asinine" and "elitist."

"It was insulting," Wurzelbacher said during an interview with Fox News. "For Joe Biden to sit there and say who can be president, who's qualified and who isn't, is just asinine, especially with the track record they left behind them. If I was this administration, or Joe Biden himself, I wouldn't want anybody looking at my record."

On Tuesday, the vice president went after Mitt Romney's record at private equity firm Bain Capital, arguing that the former Massachusetts governor's business past does not qualify him to be president.

"That doesn't mean that private equity guys are bad guys -- they're not," Biden said during a campaign stop at New Hampshire's Keene State College. "But that no more qualifies you to be president than being a plumber. And, by the way, there're an awful lot of smart plumbers. All kidding aside, it's not the same job requirement."

Wurzelbacher, a Republican, is running against Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) for the congressional seat in Ohio's ninth district. He said that blue-collar workers like him are qualified to run for office, and predicted that he and other candidates from similar backgrounds would triumph in 2012.

"The middle class workers or blue collar workers, we can do it, and, this election cycle we?re going to do it," he said. "People are going to see it happen, and it?s going to be great, so they?re going to be eating those words."

He also offered a jab at the vice president's tendency to go off-message.

"If it wasn't for him, we would never get the truth from this administration," Wurzelbacher said.

Wurzelbacher came to political prominence during the 2008 campaign, when he asked Obama about his small business tax plan during a campaign event.

?I think that when you spread the wealth around, it?s good for everybody,? Obama said.

John McCain's campaign immediately started to use Obama's response to suggest that the then-senator had a socialist agenda. The McCain team also adapted Wurzelbacher as a mascot of sorts, referencing him in debates and bringing him along on campaign stops.

Moderation ? the key to healthy video gaming? - Wordsmith VG

When Ramon Rivera brought his six-year-old son Christian to a Newburgh GameStop store earlier this month, he said he was concerned that the boy might be exposed to violence while playing video games.

?And then he?ll probably start acting the same way that they?re acting [in the game],? he said.

Christian left with a copy of NBA Live 2K10, a basketball game, but the boy had gone into the store with a much different outcome in mind.

?What was the name of that game you asked for?? Rivera asked his son. ?You told the guy that you wanted it and he said it was no good for you; it had a lot of violence in it.?

?Grand Theft Auto,? Christian replied.

Rivera said, ?He [the GameStop employee] told me it has a lot of bad stuff going on in there.?

Rivera shares a concern held by many parents: Are violent video games, as Rivera suggests, a factor in children committing real life violence?

??There?s a lot of research on the subject,? said Dr. Paul Schwartz, a professor of Psychology at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. ?Certainly violent video game viewing is not beneficial to the health and development of kids.

??But what it comes down to is ? there?s always been a boogieman for kids and adolescents. It used to be rock n? roll, then it was television, then it was computers, [now] it?s violent video games.?

Schwartz says that just like any hobby, gaming can be a normal part of an adolescent?s life. Imagine a 14-year-old boy who plays on the school?s soccer team, is a member of the school band, and also plays video games both alone and with his friends for about an hour each day.

?There?s no evidence that that, in any way, would be a trigger for him to act in a violent manner,? said Schwartz. ?There is no specific research that says, ?Here?s [an adolescent]. He plays Grand Theft Auto; now he?s going to look to buy a black market 9mm gun and go out and shoot Newburgh police.??

However, that doesn?t mean that parents should allow children equal access to kid-friendly titles like Super Mario Galaxy and bloody shooting games like the Call of Duty series.

?We?re very, very complex. And people don?t like complexity and certainly psychologists don?t like complexity. So we look to find some causative factors,? said Schwartz. ?But just because there?s some level of correlation doesn?t mean that one causes the other. There may be a correlation between kids who play violent video games and their being violent, but the question remains: Are the video games the cause of the violence? Or the fact is that these kids are violent, and that?s why they play violent video games?

?These are all unanswered questions.?

Schwartz said that violence in movies, games and television programs is prevalent in today?s society. It?s impossible to know which children might find such violence to be a cathartic experience and which children might act more violently as a direct result of consuming such media.

Like the GameStop employee who said that Grand Theft Auto games aren?t appropriate for young children like Christian Rivera, Schwartz agreed that adolescents should be exposed to age-appropriate material. Fortunately for parents, there?s a video game rating system that mirrors the one used for films. On the front of every game dating back to approximately 1995, in the bottom left corner, is a rating: ?E? for Everyone, ?E10+? for Everyone 10 and Up, ?T? for Teen, ?M? for Mature, meaning for players 17 or older, or ?AO? for adults only. On the back of the game is a list of specific content that a parent might find objectionable, from ?comic mischief? to ?intense violence.?

For those wondering, Grand Theft Auto titles have consistently earned a ?Mature? rating since the original offering in 1997.

Rivera said he?s worried about his young son?s mind, but what about his body? What about the physical effects of gaming?

Daniel Valentin, a 26-year-old secondary education teacher at AlbertusMagnusHigh School in Bardonia, N.Y.has been a gamer since the age of four or five. He says he routinely experiences pain in his hands, wrists and thumbs. ?Gaming pains are the worst. Monkey Ball on the 3DS busted my thumb and 50 hours of Soul Calibur has officially given me joint pain in my wrists and the base of my fingers,? he said. ?Very few understand the plight of the gamer.? This reporter suffered similar, recurring injuries after approximately 240 hours and 1,700 online bouts of Street Fighter IV and its successor, Super Street Fighter IV. Though not everyone experiences repetitive motion injuries from gaming, there?s a simple way for parents to help prevent them from happening: Set a reasonable limit on your child?s play time. It?s also a good way to help your child develop in a balanced manner, said Schwartz. ?Video games can be a hobby. Video games can be an outlet. Video games can be a very positive social interaction. Why is gaming any more negative than stamp collecting; people spending three or four hours a day with stamps or coins?? he said. ?The downside of gaming would be the downside of any extensive amount of time in front of a screen. ?If you spend five hours a day in front of your computer screen? than that?s negative because it limits your time face to face with friends, your other interaction time, and it keeps you for five hours in front of a computer screen ? and we know about childhood and adolescent obesity. ?It?s like anything else: It can be very positive if done in moderation and there are other outlets.? However, there?s one segment of the population, said Schwartz, who might benefit from many hours of gaming. ?Video games would be great for somebody who is old and retired,? he said, ?because they can sit for five hours a day in front of a video screen and then go out and take a walk for an hour because that?s all they need [as mature adults]. But developing adolescents need more,? especially face to face social interaction and old fashioned family time.

While Christian looked over his new basketball software in the GameStop parking lot, Rivera said he wished he knew more about gaming so that he could make more informed choices for his son.

There?s a simple strategy parents can follow to do just that: Sit down and play video games with your children. One can learn a lot from the type of games a child prefers and the way he or she plays them. If nothing else, your child will enjoy some quality social interaction and family time ? and it doesn?t take a psychologist to understand the benefits of that.

The psychology of learning a language

Its name is Heschl's gyrus and it is found in the area of the primary auditory cortex, that is the cortical structure in charge of processing incoming auditory information. But what's more, your ability to learn easily a foreign language also depends on this area, and more precisely on its dimensions.

Learning a language which is different from your native idiom is not just a question of practice, but it depends also on your brain potential. This discovery has been attributed to some researchers from the Northwestern University of Chicago who published a study on the Celebral Cortex review giving scientific base to a quite common belief. Learning languages can be difficult and a challenging task. Translators know it all and find the art of learning languages fun. Learning languages can help an individual with a earning good project with a renowned Translation Agency.

Scientists conducted an experiment on 17 people aged between 18 and 26. They measured the dimensions of their Helschl'gyrus through a magnetic resonance imaging and, on this basis they managed to identify who, among them, would have learnt more quickly 18 words of a pseudo-invented language. The bigger the volume of the area, the easier it was for them to learn new words. In particular, the dimensions of the left part of the gyrus marked the difference, as declared by Catherine Warrier, one the scientists.

Those who took part in the experiment, all English native speakers, had their Holschl's gyrus measured at the start and subsequently entered into a sound-proof booth and listened to six sounds made up of just one syllable (pesh, dree, ner, vece, nuck and fute), produced in three different tonalities. The pseudo-words were 18 in total, because in tonal languages the meaning of a word changes according to the tonality. The 18 words were associated to images that represented their meaning. The sound ?pesh', for example, was linked, according to the different tonality, to the words ?glass', ?pencil' and ?table'. The nine participants who had the biggest Heschl's gyrus managed to identify the pseudo-words at a rate of 97%. The rest of them scored a 63%. Some of them needed to listen to the words 18 times to recognize the sounds. Looking at the above situation we can clearly understand the several difficulties a translator may face during translation projects. However they still have to maintain professional translation standards to stay competitive in the market.

This shows there is a connection between biology and linguistic ability, so that some people are more predisposed than others to learning a foreign language. During the past, some researches had already proved there is relationships between linguistic skills and brain structure, but for the first time scientists have managed to spot the precise area where this phenomenon takes place. Translation Services providers continuously wok on these research findings to choose the best translators available in the market.?

Arthritis pain is reduced by mirror reflections of healthier joints

Amputees who experience phantom limb pain can sometimes get relief from an optical illusion. This trick involves looking in a mirror at the reflection of a healthy limb from a certain angle, which causes it to appear where the missing limb should be. Seeing the limb move freely fools the brain into relieving the pain. Now a study suggests this technique might also work for arthritis pain.

Cognitive scientist Laura Case, working in the lab of Vilayanur S. Ramachandran (a member of Scientific American Mind?s board of advisers) at the University of California, San Diego, used a modified version of the mirror technique to superimpose a researcher?s healthy hand over a subject?s arthritic hand, which was painfully constricted or contorted. Subjects mimicked the slow, purposeful movements of the researcher?s hand with their own unseen hand. After experiencing the illusion of their hand moving smoothly, subjects rated their arthritis pain slightly lower than before and had an increased range of motion.

The result suggests that the toxic soup of inflammatory molecules bathing an arthritic joint is not the only source of painful sensations. ?The brain has learned to associate movement with pain,? says Case, who presented her results at the Society for Neuroscience meeting last November in Washington, D.C. The illusion provides the brain with a way to disconnect the sight from the sensation. Next, the group will investigate whether this type of mirror therapy might provide long-term benefits for arthritis, a condition that affects about 50 million Americans.

McLaughlin was at Google when the search-engine giant made its ultimately failed foray into China, and he says that experience has left him ?scarred.? In an interview with Slate?s Jacob Weisberg, McLaughlin says that even though the Chinese government can?t control the flow of information to the extent it once did, it can and does undermine American tech companies? prospects for success inside China.??
