Acute promyelocytic leukemia: From highly fatal to highly curable
BETHESDA, Maryland (Feb. 6, 2012) The National Foundation for Cancer Research announced today that Dr. Zhen-Yi Wang and Dr. Zhu Chen have been awarded the 7th annual Szent-Gyrgyi Prize for Progress in Cancer Research for their innovative research that led to the successful development of a new therapeutic approach to acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL).
By combining traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine, Drs. Wang and Chen have provided dramatic improvement in the five-year disease-free survival rate of APL patients from approximately 25 percent to 95 percent making this therapy a standard of care for APL treatment throughout the world, and turning one of the most fatal diseases into a highly curable one.
"I am so glad to see that the efforts we have devoted to research on leukemia these last several decades have led to solid clinical benefits to APL patients around the world," said Dr. Wang. "This award will inspire us as we continue our efforts to find more effective therapies to treat cancers."

A clinical researcher at the Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai in the early 1980s, Dr. Zhen-Yi Wang performed the first successful therapy on APL patients using all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), which significantly increased the survival rate of patients with APL. Dr. Zhu Chen, a former student of Wang, made major contributions to the identification of the molecular mechanisms of both ATRA and arsenic trioxide in APL. He also demonstrated in clinical trials that arsenic trioxide, a compound used as a traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,400 years, is effective against APL. Since the 1990s, Drs. Wang and Chen have worked together to conduct clinical trials combining ATRA and arsenic trioxide to treat APL patients, with great success.
"Drs. Wang and Chen have quite literally changed the face of medicine for patients suffering from APL. Their combined work has saved countless lives and will continue to save many more lives around the world both today and in future generations," said Dr. Beatrice Mintz, Fox Chase Cancer Center, Chair of the 7th Selection Committee of Szent-Gyrgyi Prize and winner of the 6th Annual Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Prize. "Terminal differentiation of cancer cells has been an important focus in my research, and I am very happy about the successful clinical application of this principle by Drs. Wang and Chen. One week ago tonight, I sat down to watch the Australian Open final with my mum (my dad gave it a miss because of his high blood pressure), reverting to my old habits of getting things done with my Mac on my lap and a glass of red in hand. As I was cracking open the bottle, Mum said to me, ?Nole hasn?t won yet? (Nole is what we call Novak Djokovic because that?s what Serbs call Novak Djokovic and we are Serbs. My personal trainer is part Croatian so that should give you some idea of how well assimilated I am). I responded, ?my boyfriend is still alive; I?ve had a win today.?
Julio doesn?t like me writing about him, and because I want to preserve the relationship, I refrain from giving out too many details of our blessed common-law union. So I won?t tell you what was going on. But I will tell you that he was in hospital, and he is fine now. He is playing guitar as I write this, and the only discernible difference between his pre-hospital self and his current self is that his pants are hanging off his derriere as he?s apparently forgotten how to use a belt (or possibly has just lost a lot of weight).
Anyway, a week ago, I wasn?t afraid for his life, but something that should?ve been simple got complicated. Other things in my life got put on hold. I felt scattered and exhausted and I just wanted him home. I learned so much about how different it is for me to love someone now as opposed to how I loved a few years ago (?I can?t differentiate your pain from my pain? versus ?zomg, ur a babe ? WHY DON?T YOU LOVE ME???!!??!?).
But more than anything else, while Julio was in hospital and I was sadly and slowly trudging through everything else, I was reminded how awesome our relationship is.

I know how disgusting this is sounding so I want to make something really clear before we go on; I?m not just talking about how much we forget to appreciate our partners and relationships. I?m also talking about how much we forget to appreciate not being in relationships.

This is comfortable and awesome and has enabled me to do so much more with myself because I?m not obsessing over cretins, but as much as I hate to admit it, it does make me take him for granted.
You can?t live in a state of tension, as is often required by exciting (read: tumultuous) relationships, forever. But nor should you just live in comfort, whatever your situation. I fucking loved being single; I knew that at some point, statistically, I would probably pair off and be non-single for the rest of my life, and I wanted to make the most of being single for as long as that was indeed my relationship status. And in retrospect, I?m really glad that I had as much fun as I did (that doesn?t just mean casual sex, though that was awesome too) and didn?t just wish for a boyfriend the entire time.

A team of Spanish researchers have used different geological samples, extracted from the Enol lake in Asturias, to show that the Holocene, a period that started 11,600 years ago, did not have a climate as stable as was believed.
The Holocene period, which includes the last 11,600 years of our history, has always been described as a stable period in terms of climatic conditions, especially when compared to the abrupt changes that occurred in the last ice age, which ended around 10,000 years ago, giving way to the Holocene.
A study carried out by researchers from the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology (IPE) at the Spanish Research Scientific Council (CSIC), in collaboration with other scientists from Zaragoza, La Corua, Valencia and Cdiz universities, and published in the Journal of Paleolimnology, has found climatic differences amongst the "stable" 13,500 years.
The study specifically focused on the Enol lake (Asturias), where various sediment samples were extracted from the bottom. These samples provide data about the regional humidity and temperature changes in the area over more than 135 centuries.
The project, together with a previous study that details the last ice age and another, more recent one that examines the last centuries, implies "the first time glacial evolution and climate change have been registered in the last 40,000 years in the Picos de Europa National Park" claims Ana Moreno, researcher from the IPE-CSIC and lead author of the study.
The Enol lake was formed 40,000 years ago following the retreat of a glacier which dug a trough, allowing the accumulation of sediments and water. 18,000 years ago it was already a lake and organic sediments that are currently being studied were starting to be deposited.
From the lake sediments the physical properties and the amounts of organic carbon, carbonate and other elements, could be analysed, as well as some biological indicators, such as diatom and ostracod fossils.
Vegetation cover evolution
Furthermore, the detailed study of pollen accumulated in this material allows us to make a reconstruction of the variations of vegetation cover, which is crucial information in the context of climate change and the impact of human beings.

The third period had a drier climate, between 8,700 and 4,650 years ago, and finally a return to the more humid climate from then up to 2,220 years ago. The study also highlights the changes caused in the latest period caused by human activity, specifically from pasture and deforestation.
The study's conclusions therefore report significant environmental changes throughout the last 13,500 years in history. They also show how at the beginning of the Holocene, the vegetation coverage of the area, which until that time had consisted of Pinus (pine), Betula (birch) and Quercus (oak), then became a forest of mainly Quercus.
Researchers also highlight an increase in precipitation for nearly twelve centuries (between 9,750 and 8,600 years ago), which led to an increase in Corylus, or in other words, Hazel. Although the study of these geological traces from the Enol lake only covers up to 2,200 years ago, it is possible to determine the environmental impact that the region's inhabitants of that time had from studying the pollen.
Former use of mountain pastures
Moreno said that "The use of mountain pastures is possibly the oldest documented human activity in the area. As we have seen, the lengthy sampling of Lago Enol detected that an opening in the landscape began 4,650 years ago, and most notably from 2,700 years ago".
The results also show that from 4,650 years ago, humans contributed a greater presence of herbaceous species (from the Plantago and Rumex Acetosella genera) and a decrease in the area's woodlands.
Those in charge of the study claim that these hydrological and landscape stages from the Enol lake sediments demonstrate the biggest changes in the climate registered during the Holocene in the south of Europe. It?s been seven years since Alexander Payne?s last feature, the acclaimed and award-winning dramatic comedy Sideways. He?s returned to middle age crises for his new film, with George Clooney leading the cast, and it?s proven to be an awards magnet. Hawaii lawyer Matt King (Clooney) is reeling. His wife is in a coma after a powerboat racing accident, leaving him to take responsibility for his daughters, 17-year old Alexandra (Shailene Woodley) and 10 year old Scottie (Amara Miller). He?s also planning the sale of a large piece of land that his family have looked after for generations. When he discovers that his wife is dying and that she was cheating on him, he decides that it?s time to start taking care of things.Payne?s a filmmaker known for not flinching from unpleasant truths. The man behind Citizen Ruth, Election, About Schmidt, and Sideways has a history of making comedy dramas with sharp teeth. So it?s a bit of a disappointment to find The Descendants is somewhat toothless. It?s certainly entertaining and sometimes quite moving, but it?s content to keep the darkness at the edges instead of really engaging it. The film is at its strongest when Matt confronts his problems head on, and given that the film starts with Matt?s narration telling us that people in Hawaii are just as screwed up as everyone else, it seems strange that The Descendants is so laid-back for most of its running time.Clooney?s been given awards recognition already for his performance as the passive Matt. It?s an effective, subdued portrayal of a man struggling to connect with his children for pretty much the first time and generally start taking an active role. Matt is in a constant see-saw between what?s acceptable and what?s not, and trying to figure out where he needs to set boundaries. His relationship with his daughter Alexandra is one of the film?s high-points, as she is still identifiably a teenager but she is also able to take on the responsibility that Matt is incapable of. The character?s growing up is not in any way exaggerated or unbelievable. Woodley is excellent and as deserving of attention as Clooney, and she works wonderfully with Miller.But Payne never really scrapes deep enough beneath the surface. While it?s refreshing to see a drama in which the lead doesn?t have to break down and fracture completely, things progress a little too neatly and simply here. There are too many overly familiar elements of family drama, from the unnecessary narration to stock characters like the stoner boyfriend (Nick Krause) and the angry father-in-law (Robert Forster). ?But the film improves in its final third, with impressively written and performed, honest scenes featuring Matthew Lillard (Scream) and the always-excellent Judy Greer (Arrested Development).The mellow tone matches the Hawaiian setting and it?s certainly an enjoyable, often surprisingly funny watch. However, we would have liked Payne to go a bit deeper.Verdict: An entertaining drama that?s a little shallow but enjoyable nevertheless. Shailene Woodley?s definitely one to watch.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? If Snooki and JWoww need a place to live, Jersey Shore will welcome them with open arms.
Jersey Shore, Pa., that is.
The Central Pennsylvania Film Office wants the stars of MTV's "Jersey Shore" reality show to go to the tiny borough in north-central Pennsylvania or to nearby Williamsport to shoot a planned spinoff of their gym-tan-laundry lifestyle.
The commissioner of the film office, Lorena Beniquez, was quick to jump on the news that officials in Hoboken, N.J., had refused to issue a permit for the new reality show that will feature hard-partying stars Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley.
So, Beniquez thought, why not invite the "Jersey Shore" stars to the borough of the same name about 140 miles northwest of Philadelphia and only slightly farther than that from Hoboken? Failing that, Beniquez is hoping the producers might consider shooting in Williamsport, the Lycoming County seat.
"Most of the time, when we make headlines, it's for the Little League World Series," Beniquez said, referring to the global tournament played in Williamsport each summer. "Or the gas industry. We want to be known for something once the gas industry is done and gone."
A phone call and an email seeking comment were left with 495 Productions, the Beverly Hills, Calif., production company that was snubbed by Hoboken.
But MTV said it was "flattered by the invitation" to Pennsylvania.
"We love all Jersey Shores!" it said.
Officials in Williamsport, population 29,000, and Jersey Shore, which has about 4,300 residents, say they're all ears if MTV or the production company wants to pitch the show to them.
"It would be fun to have the spotlight on the borough," said Jersey Shore borough manager Gretchen Speicher. "But we'd like to know what the show's going to be about, will it be shot inside or outside ... and I would like to know because I've never seen ('Jersey Shore')."
Williamsport city clerk Janet Frank was excited at the prospect, too.
"Oh, my gosh, yes," Frank said when asked if she'd be interested in hearing a pitch for the show. "I think that's awesome. I think that's a great idea. It's a great way to get attractions here."
Hoboken officials refused to issue the permit that would allow the reality stars to be filmed around the clock, citing public safety and other concerns. Some critics have said "Jersey Shore" perpetuates negative Italian-American stereotypes that are sometimes referred to as the "guido/guidette" lifestyle.
Some local historians think the Jersey Shore borough got its name because some of its original settlers in the early 1800s were from the Jersey shore, Speicher said. Others say Jersey used to mean "opposite" and the borough was so named because it was across the Susquehanna River from another settlement, Speicher said.
Whatever the case, Beniquez said she believes the show focusing on the two reality TV stars would work in Lycoming County, one of nine served by her office.
"From what we've heard in their press," Beniquez said, "it sounds like it could be a good fit for our region."

Whether cute and cuddly or fierce and frightening, animals affect the brain in ways scientists are just starting to appreciate. In a study of people who had electrodes implanted in their brain for the treatment of epilepsy, an international team discovered neurons that respond specifically to animals. The 41 individuals in the study were shown picturesof recognizable landmarks, objects, animals and people for about one second each as tiny electrodes measured the activity of individual neurons in three regions of their brain. When the researchers analyzed the electrical data from the 400 to 550 neurons in each region, they found a marked jump in the activity of neurons in the right amygdala that was not seen in the other brain regions tested?and only after viewing the pictures of animals. The report by senior author Christof Koch, a neuroscientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, and his colleagues appeared this past August online in Nature Neuroscience. (Koch also writes the monthly column Consciousness Redux for Scientific American Mind.)
Previous studies in animals hinted that the right hemi?sphere might be specialized for detecting prey or threats. Given the amygdala?s proposed role in emotion and arousal, this finding led the team to speculate that the right-amygdala response might have evolutionary roots. More broadly, the fact that only the right side of the amygdala responds specifically to animals is tantalizing, Koch explains, because it is the first time this kind of hemispheric asymmetry has been found at the cellular level in the human brain.
